2017 Great Victorian Bike Ride

Information:

This year Frankston High School will once again be offering up to 40 students the opportunity to participate in the Great Victorian Bike Ride (GVBR). Over the last six years we have had around 200 participants successfully take part in this amazing event.  Each year, up to 5000 people enter the event along with 1500 volunteers.  It really is a mobile community that makes it’s way through regional Victoria.  The 2017 route looks spectacular, starting at Wilson’s Promontory, travelling through Gippsland and finishing in Trafalgar.

Over the years, Frankston High School has established a reputation for being an outstanding school both on and off the road and is highly regarded by all riders.  We look forward to this continuing in 2017.

This activity is very demanding and involves riding for nine days and camping.   Students ride during the day and camp with up to 5000 people for the evenings.  In preparation, students participate in months of training rides and will cover up to 1000km.

The key benefits for our students are:

* Improved self-confidence, resilience and personal development.

*Improved teamwork skills from working in groups.

*Practical bicycle maintenance skills.

*Better physical fitness through training and undertaking the ride.

*Improved mental and emotional health outcomes through physical fitness and activity.

*Heightened spatial awareness skills from riding and communicating in groups.

*Exposure to greater social diversity by mixing with a large group of students from others schools and the general public.

*An awareness of many different parts of Victoria.

How Far: The total distance is approximately 518 km, (averaging about 75km per day)

How Many Can Go?

School groups vary in size from two to 90, with the average group size being 16. Frankston High School is currently offering 40 students the opportunity to participate in this year’s event, which equates to 10 places for each year level.

How Much Will It Cost?

The cost for students at Frankston High School in 2017 is $950.00.  This includes all meals, luggage transport each day, first aid support, entertainment, camp sites, on road mechanical and police support, the cost of transporting bikes, luggage and participants to the event and the riders jersey for students.

Can Parents/Guardians Come Too?

Yes, parent/guardians are encouraged to share this wonderful experience.  They can ride in a supervisory capacity with the Frankston High School team, (there are limited numbers).  If you wish to participate as a parent you will need to complete the relevant documentation. The cost for parents is $1000.00.  This covers the cost that Bicycle Network Victoria charge adult riders.  Given that the parents are expected to assist with supervision during training rides and the event, as well as helping around the campsite, we cover the other costs such as transportation to the event and meals not provided by Bicycle Network Victoria.

Requirements:

All students need to have a sound, reliable and roadworthy bike. All bikes will undergo a thorough safety inspection prior to the first training ride.  Students will also need to have appropriate riding gear that is capable of coping with all weather conditions.  As we will be camping students will need to have their own camping gear.

Should your child wish to participate in this year’s event. There will be an information evening held in the Presentation Space on Tuesday 9 May, at 6.30pm. Should you be interested but unable to make the meeting or if you have any queries regarding the 2017 GVBR, you can contact Mr Mal Burt on 9783 7955.
