Fabulous 5/6

Week 2

Message from the Teachers

Welcome back to Term 2 and what will hopefully be a very busy and productive term. Thank you to everyone for your support of the students with swimming, our group of 5’s and 6’s have done a great job of showing responsibility for their possessions and respect for their instructors.

Now that we have finished swimming, we can really focus in on our learning for this term. In reading we will be focusing on establishing our classes’ Book Clubs. Book Club is a positive way of establishing good reading habits, analysing, and understanding what we read and promoting discussion with peers about what we read. In writing, we will be focusing on report writing, creating non-fiction texts that are informative, factual, and free from opinions. In Maths we will be moving through subtraction and multiplication in levelled groups that will be targeting areas of need and ability levels.

We will also be off on an excursion to the CERES Environment Park to begin our Inquiry unit on the First Australians and their connection with country and where we live. Please look out for the Compass post about this and contact the office, Sam or Nick for any further information.

As always, please contact Sam or Nick if you need anything to support your child or about any of the upcoming events. Our emails are: Nicholas.Duckett@education.vic.gov.auSamuel.Boontjes@education.vic.gov.au

Homework will also begin in Week 3 and we appreciate your ongoing support of this program.

What we have been up to

For the last two weeks, year 5s and 6s have been going to swimming lessons at Waves. There have been four groups (red, yellow, blue, and green) and each group has been working on swimming skills whilst playing games. The Water Safety Day was especially fun because we got to go into the deep pool.

We also have been learning about angles (different angle types and how to use a protractor) and have started Book Club. 56A is reading “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and 5A is reading “Matilda”. In Writing, we are doing information reports which include topics such as sports, gaming, dancing, places in the world and animals.

This term, we are looking forward to interschool sports and our excursion.
