Thought for the week

'Gratitude and love should abide in every heart each day of all the years.' Mary Baker Eddy

I wish all parents, students and staff a warm welcome to 2020, whether you are new to Huntingtower like myself, or returning for another year.

Joining the Huntingtower community has been an enriching and personally moving experience. I have been given an opportunity to meet new people, make connections and share stories about the rich culture that exists at Huntingtower. I encourage all new families to embrace the friendship I know will have been extended to you and to continue to connect with the community during your time at Huntingtower. If your experience has been like mine, you will have felt very welcome.

The Parents and Friends’ Welcome Picnic, to be held in the Huntingtower Quadrangle at 6 pm on Friday 21 February will be another opportunity to meet new people. Families can bring a picnic and rug, enjoy a BBQ and meet with families and staff. We have encouraged students to sign up for the ‘Buskers’ Corner’ to give them an authentic performance opportunity and provide entertainment for all of us to enjoy. I look forward to seeing you at the picnic.

In the Thought for the Week by Mary Baker Eddy, Mrs Eddy says that gratitude and love should abide in every heart, each day. I encourage all of you to keep these words close to your heart and think about how we can enact them in our daily lives. I have already witnessed students and staff consciously expressing love, thankfulness and gratitude, which is so wonderful to see.

This week, we were contacted by a local resident of Lorne, where our Year 12 students were attending their annual conference. The resident witnessed firsthand the love, thankfulness and kindness of our most senior students while they were in the supermarket purchasing breakfast supplies. The students had entered the supermarket as a large group. The resident, initially concerned about seeing so many young people, was amazed at the polite manners the students displayed, the way they communicated with and supported each other and the warmth, love and gratitude they extended to all members of the public and supermarket staff. The resident was so touched by the positive culture she had witnessed, she went home and researched Huntingtower online. The resident felt very strongly that she should contact us to express her gratitude for the lovely culture that exists at Huntingtower. This was a beautiful gesture which reinforces the ethos of our school and which should make us all feel very proud.

When you see good in the world, let other people know so it fills their heart with joy along with your own:

'All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.' (2 Corinthians 4:15)

I wish everyone a wonderful year ahead and look forward to meeting you at our many school events,

Andrew Houghton
