Leadership Centre

Curriculum

It’s all systems go in the Leadership Centre! We can honestly say that all Year 5/6 classes have had a settled start to Term 2, albeit  from home. Obviously this term is going to look a lot different but teachers have spent a considerable amount of time discussing, planning and implementing a valuable learning program for all students. In saying this though, we are all learning along the way as this current situation is unprecedented. The teachers in the Leadership Centre (as in all centres) are constantly discussing (via  video meetings) and refining our delivery and tweaking the learning tasks as we receive valuable feedback along the way.

The weekly timetable (attached) outlines the tasks and materials needed to ensure work is completed on time. All students have downloaded and made a copy of their Term 2 Journal which has been shared with their teachers to enable them to comment and leave feedback. All specialist work is being uploaded to Seesaw.

The Zoom meetings have been one highlight for everyone so far. All classes have a Zoom meeting at the start of the day at 9:00am. At this time teachers record attendance, explain the tasks for the day and answer any questions. Students are also re-connecting with their classmates and teachers in the afternoon to mark and discuss the completed work, answer more questions and even listen to dad jokes (for one class anyway-any guesses as to which one?). Teachers are also looking to incorporate quizzes, class novel reading and other games to make this opportunity an even more engaging one. We have also been sharing students’ work in small groups on Zoom.

The Zoom expectations have been explained to all students and they need to add their name at the bottom of the document (on Google Classroom) to confirm that they understand each one. All Leadership Centre teachers have been very impressed with their students’ maturity and enthusiasm while participating in all Zoom meetings.

Extra documents and information for students are uploaded to Google Classroom daily. Students will receive notifications when these are uploaded and are encouraged to check the site throughout the day.

In Mathematics, students created a remote learning timetable which needed to include all of the required elements:

1 x 45-60 minute literacy session (reading or writing)

1 x 30-45 minute maths session

1 x 30 minute physical activity session

No Screen Homework Grid (see attached photo)

Include your recess and lunch times

Silent Reading (30min) and Manga High time

Include Specialist activities throughout the week

This is indeed a relevant task that connects directly to the real-world. Creating the timetables enables students to plan and visualise what their working week looks like.

This week in Maths will see 'post testing' conducted on Essential Assessment as well as students accessing differentiated star tasks which include comparing and ordering common unit fractions and locating and representing them on a number line, adding and subtracting numbers that have units and decimal numbers to thousandths and placing positive and negative fractions on a number line using a mental checklist.

In Reading, students have been researching the importance of Anzac Day and the events that led up to World War 1. They will still have time in sessions this week to complete their research which will then be uploaded to Seesaw as it is their first official portfolio piece for Term 2.

In Writing, students completed a spelling task which required them to use the ‘111’ rule when determining whether the last letter is doubled when adding a vowel adding, Eg, stop=stopping. There were a series of steps that needed to be checked before deciding whether the last letter was doubled or not. Students also accessed the Google Sites website and chose tasks which included book recommendations, using the Pobble 365 website to generate a visual stimulus for narrative writing, using the Narrative Story Graph template to show the steps of their favourite movie as well as writing a persuasive piece of their own choice.

Writing sessions this week will see students brainstorming arguments and then expounding on them to write an engaging persuasive piece. On Thursday students will plan and write a Holiday Recount.

On top of the expected Maths and Literacy tasks students are also expected to independently read for 30 minutes and to complete allocated tasks/maths games on Manga High-at least 15 min a day is the minimum requirement. Teachers are able to view how much time students are spending on Manga High and keep track of the tasks completed. Students still need to keep track of how many pages they read each day (recorded in their diary). This is then to be shared on their Term 2 Journal for teachers to check at the end of the week on Friday.

Students are expected to complete 30 minutes of fitness everyday. Mrs. Brisbane has been uploading daily fitness challenges onto Google Classroom. Photos and videos of completed fitness sessions need to be added to Seesaw (into the PE folder). It has been great to see the different and creative photos and videos students have uploaded to showcase their fitness sessions.

We look forward to another week working from home, but more importantly working together, learning together and supporting each other. We want to thank the parents and other family members for supporting their child’s learning from home-we certainly have not forgotten your important role during this time. We are all in this together! We will stay connected!

Have a great week!

Student Voice

Surya B 5/6SB: The highlight from the first week of remote learning was having a Zoom meeting.

My favourite part of the Zoom meetings are when Mr.Shaw reads boy overboard.

Shriya D 5/6SB: The highlight from the first week of remote learning was doing my no device homework grid. My favourite part of zoom meeting is when Mr. Shaw read boy overboard to us and we can draw what we saw in our heads. I am looking forward to seeing the new playground in our school.

Jay V 5/6SB: The highlight from the first week of remote learning was having PE every day.  I am looking forward to go to school.

Reminders

We want to remind students of ensuring that they are being a responsible user when working online as well as messaging and speaking appropriately to others when required. This is a message that we often repeat at school but we wanted to highlight this again, particularly under the current circumstances. A good way of thinking about this is if a screenshot was taken of your message and seen by a parent or teacher would you be happy with that?

If parents have any questions/queries we ask that you message teachers via Sentral.

All morning Zoom meetings commence at 9am. It is very important that students are connected at this time.

Please ensure that your child has an appropriate working space that is away from distractions and background noise, eg. the TV or kitchen.

As well as the expected work on the weekly slides, students are expected to independently read for 30min. We suggest that they are reading between 8:50-9:00am before their Zoom Meeting. Students are expected to spend at least 15min each on Manga High completing assigned tasks.
