Mission Discovery
6 of our students attended the Mission Discovery program at Melbourne University during the term break. The students worked learnt from NASA astronaut, engineer and ISS commander Steve Swanson, NASA leaders and expert scientists from the University of Melbourne. They took on the role of research scientists and design a space Science experiment in different teams. The overall winning team’s experiment, as judged by the NASA panel, will be launched to the International Space Station and conducted by astronauts on board! As a result the students developed leadership, teamwork and public speaking skills.
The student who attended were Micheal Nicolaou, Violetta Mangiavillano, Ronan Lobo, Gerogina Karras, Sara Kendrijian and Evan Wong. Evan wong was in one of the groups which were shortlisted for the final round.
"May I just say that participating in this program was one of the most enriching experiences i’ve ever had. The concept of it was so phenomenal that I struggled to believe it was real. It was amazing and I would recommend it to any space enthusiasts out there." - Michael Nicolaou, MacKillop 4

Assist a Student Day
On Thursday 7th October, the Mini Vinnies held their annual outreach day. This year, their focus was on educating children in less developed countries of the Asia Pacific region. Through a program managed by the SVDP society called ‘Assist a Student’, a mere $70 can educate a child for a year. ‘It is a common belief that education improves a young person’s opportunity of gaining useful employment, thereby increasing their ability to support themselves and their families. It is a means of empowering an individual to break out of the cycle of poverty.’
The day was embraced by the entire school community. A donation of $3 per student was encouraged, together with a lunch time sausage sizzle, enabling the Vinnies to raise in excess of $2,300, a truly magnificent effort. The money raised by each Pastoral Group will be allocated to a child who can now be educated, potentially changing their lives. All up, we will be able to educate approximately 34 children for the next 12 months, and hopefully beyond with similar appeals in the years ahead.
The Vinnies would like to thank the whole school community for their continued support of their ‘good works’ because without each and every one of you, none of this would be possible.
Stay tuned for our Christmas Appeal where we focus our attention closer to home, in the hope that families struggling in our local community are able to provide a present from Santa to their children on Christmas day.

Homework Club
This year Nazareth College was extremely fortunate to receive funding through the Ballandry and Homework Club Partnership, sub funds of AC and the R E Ross Trust.
Homework Club has been operating in the Resource Centre each Thursday after school. This is a wonderful opportunity for any student to stay and complete tasks that they would otherwise do at home. The advantage is that individual help is available at Homework Club.
We extend an invitation to all students to use Homework Club. Anyone is welcome. Students who may find this service helpful include:
- Students who find it difficult to complete work at home.
- Students who would like extra help understanding tasks.
- Students who are feeling overwhelmed with homework set.
- Students who want to get ahead.
- Students who work well in a safe, warm, well-appointed environment.
- Students who want to use free wifi
- Students who don't want to carry as many books home.
- Students who have lots of tasks due in.
- Students who are preparing for exams.
- Students who want their work checked over by a helpful tutor.
Homework club runs until 5pm every Thursday. For more information, contact Ms Mish Mackay or Ms Lisa Douglass.
We look forward to seeing more students attending Homework Club for the remainder of the school year.
