Bronze Qualifying Trip, České středohoří / May 21-22 2017

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award expedition was a very positive experience. We got to push and challenge ourselves - and most importantly, we got to miss two lessons of Czech! The expedition also helped us to develop the group organisational skills that are essential for proper management and allocation of a workforce in group projects. Even staying at the camp wasn’t, at the end of the day, as mundane as one would have expected because we got to play football and volleyball. We also made a campfire to end the first day.

One of the DofE criteria expects you to choose an aim for your expedition - a reason that gives the expedition a more profound meaning. For example, Geography students can use the expedition to examine the terrain and rock formation in the area. This could help them understand the subject more because they would get a high quality demonstration of how a certain form of, for example, erosion can shape the terrain in a specific way. Our aim was to challenge ourselves and to improve our physical condition by taking an extra long route and by doing 20-30 pushups every kilometre.

Kvalifikace na bronzové ocenění, České středohoří

Expedice v rámci Ceny vévody z Edinburghu byla velmi pozitivní zkušeností. Musíme sami sebe motivovat k nejlepšímu výkonu (a co je nejdůležitější, přišli jsme tak o 2 hodiny češtiny). Expedice nám také pomohla rozvinout dovednosti v organizování skupin, které jsou nezbytné pro správné řízení a rozložení pracovní síly v rámci skupinových projektů. Dokonce i ubytování v kempu na konci dne nebylo jen tak obyčejné, jak by se dalo očekávat, protože jsme hráli fotbal a volejbal. Také jsme udělali táborák, který zakončil první den.

Jedním z kritérií DofE je vybrat si cíl své expedice - důvod, který dává expedici hlubší význam. Například studenti zeměpisu mohou využít expedici ke zkoumání terénu a skalních útvarů v dané oblasti. To studentům pomáhá pochopit předmět lépe, protože získají kvalitní praktickou ukázku, jak může např. eroze určitým způsobem formovat terén. Naším cílem bylo překonat sami sebe a zlepšit náš fyzický stav tím, že jsme se vydali na dlouhou trasu a také tím, že jsme dělali 20 až 30 kliků po každém kilometru.

DofE Trip to Central Bohemia

We spent a weekend doing the DofE expedition and it was a lot of fun. Before that, we did our fair share of planning and training such as map reading, navigating using a compass, team building and first aid training. So we were prepared. We thought most of them were really helpful.

The aim of our expedition was to get to know the history and culture of the Středočeský kraj by visiting various churches along the way. They were beautiful and they gave us this antique, mysterious feeling that really helped shape the mood of our journey. We chose this as our aim because we think that as a student or citizen living in Czech Republic, it’s crucial to know some of its history and culture. The expedition provided us with a good opportunity to achieve this and we are always willing to have an educational trip.

So we’re glad we weren’t walking 28 kilometres aimlessly and that the journey wasn’t that mundane after all. It turned out that learning while travelling is actually quite efficient. Even though we were exhausted after a whole day’s walk, we just took a short break when we arrived at the camp and then started putting up our tent and preparing dinner. It was, of course, not a grand feast with abalone or such things, it was just simple pasta, but I felt the taste of team, friends and family.

We should all continue with the Silver level next year!

Expedice DofE po středních Čechách

Víkend jsme strávili na expedici DofE a zažili spoustu legrace. Ještě předtím jsme si odpracovali náš spravedlivý díl na plánování a procvičování: čtení map, navigace pomocí kompasu, budování týmu a výcvik první pomoci. Byli jsme tedy  připraveni. Většina z těchto aktivit byla opravdu užitečná.

Cílem naší expedice bylo poznat historii a kulturu Středočeského kraje prostřednictvím návštěv různých kostelů. Kostely byly krásné a daly nám ten správný starobylý, tajemný pocit, který pomohl utvářet náladu naší cesty. Poznání Středočeského kraje jsme si vybrali jako náš cíl, protože si myslíme, že pro studenty a občany žijící v České republice je důležité znát vlastní dějiny a kulturu. Expedice nám k tomu poskytla dobrou příležitost a my jsme vždy rádi, když můžeme absolvovat vzdělávací výlet.

Jsme rádi, že jsme nešli 28 kilometrů jen tak bez cíle a cesta nebyla taková “světská”. Ukázalo se, že učení formou cestováním je skutečně docela efektivní. I když jsme po jednodenní procházce byli vyčerpaní, udělali jsme si po návratu do kempu jen krátkou přestávku a potom jsem hned začali stavět náš stan a připravovat večeři. Samozřejmě to nebyla velká hostina s gurmánskými specialitami; byly to obyčejné těstoviny, ale cítila jsme příchuť týmu, přátel a rodiny.

Příští rok bychom všichni měli pokračovat na cestě ke získání stříbrné ceny!

The DofE International Bronze and Silver Award Ceremony at the Ministry of Culture

On Tuesday 13 June, the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Ceremony took place at the Ministry of Culture. It was great to see that our school had the most participants. The ceremony began with a bagpipe performance by a member of the Rebel Pipers and then the celebration of those achieving their awards started. We were honoured with guests such as the Deputy British Ambassador, Angus Stewart, and Šárka Pančochová, the famous Czech snowboarder, who gave out the badges and certificates. Šárka gave a short but interesting speech on what motivates her and why she chose to become a sponsor of the DofE Award Scheme. Some groups from other schools shared their stories and experiences of their trips or activities, which was very interesting to hear as we realised they all had to go through the same hard work as us.Their stories were also very different from ours, which inspired us to be even more versatile risk-takers in our DofE journey. Finally, each participant was called up to collect their Bronze or Silver badge while the moderators briefly commented on their favourite activity. The end of the ceremony was accompanied with some refreshments.

Slavnostní předávání bronzových a stříbrných cen DofE na Ministerstvu kultury

V úterý 13. června se na Ministerstvu kultury uskutečnil slavnostní ceremoniál programu Cena vévody z Edinburghu. Bylo skvělé vidět, že naše škola měla většinu účastníků. Na úvod ceremonie zahrál na dudy člen skupiny Rebel Pipers a poté začala samotná oslava těch, kteří získali ocenění. Shromáždění bylo poctěno hosty, jako jsou zástupce velvyslankyně Angus Stewart nebo známá snowboardistka Šárka Pančochová, kteří předávali odznaky a certifikáty. Šárka pronesla krátký, ale zajímavý projev o tom, co ji motivuje a proč se rozhodla stát se patronem DofE. Některé skupiny z jiných škol sdílely své příběhy a zkušenosti ze svých výletů nebo aktivit, což bylo velmi zajímavé, když jsme si uvědomili, že všichni museli pracovat stejně tvrdě jako my. Jejich příběhy se také velmi lišily od našeho a inspirovaly nás k tomu, abychom byli v naší cestě DofE ještě více všestrannými a více riskovali. Na závěr každý účastník byl vyzván, aby převzal bronzový nebo stříbrný odznak, zatímco moderátoři krátce komentovali jejich oblíbenou aktivitu. Po ceremonii bylo k dispozici občerstvení.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Ceremony

On 13 June in the Ministry of Culture, the Duke of Edinburgh Award ceremony took place. From our team, Tereza Kejvalová and I received a Silver Award. Other members either had received it already in the autumn or had decided not to continue with the programme.

After all the people had gathered into a small hall, the ceremony began with a spectacle of bagpipes and at 11am the first awards were handed out. The ceremony itself then lasted an hour and ended just as it had started - with bagpipes.

Many schools from all over the country were present but what surprised me was the diversity amongst them. There was the Bronze team, where there were people from Africa, Europe and Asia - people of different beliefs, religions and of different backgrounds. They were invited to talk about how their differences did not drive them away from each other but rather made them a better team. They talked about language and social barriers and how they were able to overcome them. They inspired me to encourage even my younger siblings in participating in such activities. Maybe not the DofE programme, but at least something smaller, like going on one-day walk with friends and family.

During the ceremony, each awardee gave a short presentation with a short description of what they had been participating in and what they achieved throughout the year. It took me by surprise how many initiatives and different activities were mentioned. I, for example, had been participating in equestrian activities, playing the piano and volunteering at the Military Hospital, where Teri joined me, while still managing to do the modern pentathlon and baking in her free time. When I realised how many hours we spent doing all of those things (for me it was over 200 hours) I came to the conclusion that there is no better way to prepare yourself for the world. The DofE teaches students about time management, being selfless and how to complete CAS without problems.

We both cannot wait to continue with our Gold Award.

Slavností předávání cen vévody z Edinburghu

13. června se na Ministerstvu kultury konalo slavnostní předávání cen vévody z Edinburghu. Z našeho týmu jsme já a Teri Kejvalová získali stříbrné ocenění. Ostatní členové ho obdrželi již na podzim nebo se rozhodli pokračovat v programu.

Poté, co se všichni lidé shromáždili v malém sále, byl ceremoniál zahájen vystoupením dudáků a v jedenáct hodin byly rozdány první ceny. Samotný slavnostní obřad trval hodinu a skončil právě tak, jako začal - hrou na dudy.

Předání se účastnili zástupci mnoha škol z celé republiky, nejvíce mě překvapila rozmanitost mezi nimi. V jednom z bronzových týmů byli studenti z Afriky, Evropy i Asie - lidé různého přesvědčení, náboženství a různých zázemí. Byli pozváni, aby hovořili o tom, jak je jejich odlišnosti nerozdělují, ale spíše je činí lepším týmem. Mluvili o jazykových a sociálních překážkách a o tom, jak je dokázali překonat. Inspirovali mě, abych zapojila do takovýchto aktivit i své mladší sourozence. Možná nebudou dělat přímo program DofE, ale alespoň něco menšího, jako třeba chodit na jednodenní procházky s přáteli a rodinou.

Během slavnostního ceremoniálu každý oceněný stručně popsal čeho se účastnil a čeho dosáhli během celého roku. Překvapilo mě, kolik iniciativ a různých aktivit bylo zmíněno. Například já jsem se podílela na jezdeckých aktivitách, hrála na klavír a pracovala jako dobrovolník ve Vojenské nemocnici, společně s Teri, která se zároveň stíhala ve svém volném čase věnovat i modernímu pětiboji a pečení. Když jsem si uvědomila, kolik hodin (pro mě to bylo přes 200 hodin) jsme těmito aktivitami strávili, dospěla jsem k závěru, že není lepší způsob, jak se připravit na reálný svět. DofE učí studenty vylepšit organizaci času, být nezištnými a dobře se připravit na program CAS.

Už se nemůžeme dočkat, až budeme pokračovat ke získání zlaté ceny.
