Hospitality news

Year 11 Hospitality students have created an amazing Masterchef-worthy dessert this week - a raspberry crème, matcha green tea sponge and a cinnamon sable. The raspberry crème was created using a similar method to a crème anglaise and was then frozen solid in chic dome molds. Students created the matcha sponge by aerating mixture using nitrous oxide in a cream gun. The mixture was then piped into paper cups and microwaved to create the incredibly airy texture. Students experimented with the plating of their dish, choosing additional components and garnishes to add flavour, texture and colour.

Tournament of Minds State Finals 2018

It was a great day for the College in having two teams reach the Tournament’s State Finals at Edith Cowan University on Sunday 9 September. After a gruelling three hours and 10 minutes the teams emerged to present their response to the Tournament Challenge.

Miss Farley’s Social Science team and Mr Connellan’s STEM team did extremely well on the day and there was great anticipation as the teams convened at Sacred Heart College on Sunday afternoon to hear the results of the finals. The Social Science team were awarded Honours, a  fantastic achievement and the STEM team were met with great applause at they were announced winners in their category and now travel to Darwin for the Australasian Pacific final on Saturday 13 October.

Please join me in congratulating both teams and in wishing Mr Connellan and the STEM team the very best of luck as they prepare to compete in Darwin.

Western Australian Schools’ Constitutional Convention 2018

Last Wednesday a select group of talented Year 11 Politics & Law students took part in the annual School’s Constitutional Convention 2018. The Convention was held at the Constitutional Centre in West Perth. The theme for this year’s Convention was Rights and Australia’s Constitution. Students took part in a full and stimulating program that examined issues including: How our rights in Australia are currently protected; Does Australia need a Bill of Rights and should those rights be legislated or should they have constitutional status.

Students who attended are invited to apply to the National Schools Constitutional Convention to be held in Canberra early next year.

Year 11 Politics and Law Excursion

Last Tuesday was the Year 11 Politics and Law Excursion. In the morning, students attended a high profile criminal trial at the District Court of Western Australia and watched a number of cases listed for sentencing in the Magistrates Court - including cases where the Accused appeared via video link from Hakea and Bandyup Prison.

In the afternoon, students visited Parliament House and were fortunate enough to meet with the Premier Mark McGowan, the Minister for Education and Training, the Hon. Sue Ellery and the Member for Cottesloe, Dr David Honey – and discussed what life was like in WA politics. This was followed by the opening of the Legislative Council and then Question Time in the Legislative Assembly - which never fails to disappoint and is always a spirited occasion - such is the joy of parliamentary privilege! A memorable excursion.

Many thanks to Ms Cee-Jay Sach (student teacher) for accompanying the class on the excursion.

Mary Ward - ACC Inclusive Athletic Carnival

The  Inclusive Association of Catholic Colleges held their annual athletics carnival at McGillivray Oval last week.  The occasion is a highlight each year as all students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of field and track events and meet up with their friends from other Colleges.  Ruby Elliot won a gold medal in the 100 metres. Maddie Brown, Joseph Salt and Chloe Williams performed brilliantly on the track and long jump events.  Everyone had a go.  Our students were thrilled to be supported and encouraged by their Notre Dame buddies who coach them a session a week in developing movement skills. Their buddies were also assisting with the organisation  of the event.  An extraordinary day of participation, action and fun.  Much enjoyed by all.

Year 10 -Fogarty Futures Leadership Conference

Lorian Marshall has been accepted into the Fogarty Futures Leadership Conference for 2018. The event is one of Western Australia's premier annual leadership conferences for Years 10 and 11 students. On Futures, students are empowered to give back to their communities. Students will have the opportunity to engage with leaders of science, sport, business, charity, and government. They will be inspired by people who were at the table when Australia's big decisions were being made. Past Fogarty Futures Leadership Conference participants have gone on to win prestigious university scholarships, including the state’s premier UWA Fogarty Scholarship, and have become leaders in their schools and broader communities.

Selection for the conference is a significant achievement and well deserved for Lorian. We congratulate Lorian and wish her all the best for a positive and rewarding experience.

RUOK Day

During Rite Journey the Year 9 students have been busy making posters, inspirational messages preparing for RUOK Day! On the 13 September the Year 9 cohort promoted the awareness of mental illness, suicide prevention and helping others in the community through difficult times. The Year 9 students brought in sweet treats and supportive messages to give out at recess as random acts of kindness along with a RUOK Day card. This card includes four easy steps to on how to have a conversation and ask if someone is 'really' okay:

  • Step 1: Ask someone if they are okay, you don’t have to use those exact words.
  • Step 2: Listen without judgement, if they are not okay listen to why and do not judge them.
  • Step 3: Give advice and support, this could mean advising them to go to a counselling session or someone who can help.
  • Step 4: Check in, every few days check up on them and talk with them again to make sure they are feeling better.

The Year 9 students raised further awareness about RUOK Day, by promoting a short video that was played at assembly. During lunch time the letters “R U OK” were displayed for the school community to write inspirational quotes on in support of others. In the pavilion a lively environment was created through upbeat music, ping pong tables and bean bags which were set up for students to sit and chat.

The Year 9 students had a great day helping raise awareness about RUOK Day, and creating a supportive school community. Many thanks go out to the Rite Journey teachers and Ms Catina the counsellor who made this day such a success.
