Assistant Principal News

This week we would like to share some of the exciting initiatives, learning and collaboration taking place at Marian Catholic College.

Three key Professional Learning Teams have been formed this year, with teachers from all KLA’s working together to improve teacher practice, engagement and student learning.

This year the College will have a focus on Numeracy across all KLA areas. The newly formed Numeracy Team have already begun their collaboration and planning. The team will be initially reviewing a range of student data and workshopping this with fellow members of staff. This team will then use collected data to plan a College wide implementation of Numeracy skills and teaching, modelling the fact that numeracy occurs in more areas than just Mathematics.

The GAP team also had their first meeting this week. This team will focus on Growth Action Plans for students requiring further individual support and intervention in their learning. The members of the GAP team have already begun planning their initial support strategies by analysing the College’s newly established Year 9 Data Wall (a physical wall that holds learning and growth data for all of our current Year 9 students in literacy and numeracy). This team will also provide support to staff as they sharpen their focus on assisting students individually and improving outcomes.

Thirdly, a Gr8 Thinking Team of teachers has also been continued this year, with a focus on Quality Assessment and Instruction. This team will help plan, develop and review Staff Professional Learning Sessions this year and will be the pioneers in implementing some of the exciting new projects, pedagogy and learning methods.

These teams are not only diverse in subject area, but also in experience and style. Each of these teams involve teachers meeting and planning in their own time - all for one purpose - our collective desire to improve student learning and engagement at the College. I thank all of these teachers for participating in these Professional Learning Teams and look forward to working with them this year and sharing this progress with you in future newsletters.

On Wednesday night we hosted our first Yr 11 and Yr 12 HSC information session. The well supported event saw parents and students join together to listen to important information around student wellbeing, study tips and HSC procedures and policies. These nights provide valuable insight and we encourage all to attend the remaining three sessions.

Our annual Student leadership session was also held on Wednesday afternoon.  The session, presented by Mrs Segrave and Mr Neville, revolved around the meaning of leadership, self awareness of personal attributes and the fundamental link to our College Vision and Mission. It was a fantastic gathering which we look forward to nurturing through the remainder of the year.

Yours in Learning,

Lora Segrave and Damien Herb
