Year 12 Geography - Regional Resource Recovery Centre Canning Vale
On Wednesday August 22, the Year 12 Geography students visited the Regional Resource Recovery Centre in Canning Vale as part of their studies on the challenge of waste management in the Perth metropolitan area. Students were able to see the waste composting facility where general waste is turned into compost, the green waste facility where garden waste was turned into mulch and the materials recovery facility where recyclables are separated, baled and sold for reuse.
Students learned that Resource Recovery Plants are a far more sustainable option for dealing with the challenge of waste management. This is because they divert rubbish from landfill giving it a value with the goal of selling it to markets for recycling or recovering and reusing it in the community. Students were also informed that we all play a part in waste management and we can all take some simple steps to reduce contamination. These include ensuring our recyclables are put loose into the recycling bin (not in plastic bags) and that plastic containers have their lids removed before putting them in the recycling bin. Such simple steps can help resource recovery centres run more efficiently and recycle more of our waste. Special thanks to Ms Erica Rogers for attending and driving the bus on the day.
