Classroom News - Year 6

Maths
Year 6 have spent the last two weeks investigating length and then using this knowledge to produce maps of our upcoming trip to Canberra and programming Spheros to perform set tasks. Students should now be able to convert between the different measurements of length, for example, 1000m = 1km. To support learning, parents can ask questions about the distance between stops on the trip to Canberra and how long each section will take based on speed limits of 100km/h on the highway and 50km/h in Canberra.
English
Year 6 are busy finalising their St Joseph's Cup Speeches which are to be informative and based on a topic of their choice. On Tuesday, we heard engaging presentations from Riley and Sarah about superheroes and spiders. To help your children with their speeches have them present to you and provide feedback on the following:
Is the speech between two and three minutes long?
Will the speech engage an audience of Year 6 students and their teachers?
Does the speech incorporate technical language related to the topic?
Science
In our microorganisms unit we have been investigating the properties of yeast and what it requires to produce CO2. If you make your own home-brew or bake your own bread it would be great to go through the process with your children. We have already learnt a lot from some of our budding bakers and the process they go through when baking bread at home. Baking is also a great way to show your children how we use Maths in our day to day lives using different forms of measurement and multiplying recipes to feed a family.
