Classroom News - Year 5

Homework Reminder
We have had an enthusiastic renewal of home reading expectations in Term Three. Just a reminder to parents that students area expected to read for 20 minutes each night. Children need to log their book title and page numbers into their diaries and have this signed by parents. Mrs Tafra and Mrs Deshon are checking these each Friday morning and are looking forward to 100% diary presentation this week.
What's happening in Grade Five
5C have just completed their science unit called "What's the Matter" where they curiously investigated the properties of solids, liquids and gases with Mrs Phelps. 5F are now embarking on this unit with Mrs Phelps and Mrs Deshon for the next three weeks.
5F have just completed investigating how different environments shape the type of housing that is built.
They have done a fantastic job designing a house for an environment of their choice. 5C will now begin their investigations in this geographical unit. They will continue this over the next three weeks with Mrs Flynn and Mrs Tafra.
In Mathematics we are working with improper fractions and mixed numerals as well as sharpening our mental computation skills.
Students will begin writing their speeches for the St Joseph's Cup this week and next. These need to be written in class. All students will be presenting their speeches in their class groups on Thursday 23rd August or Friday 24th August. The grade final will be held on 29th August. You may wish to discuss the topics with your child this week. Students should choose a topic that they like and know a lot about, but it should be one everyone else would consider interesting.
Finals this year will require each student to prepare a piece of prose that will be chosen so that all competitors will be competing in the same category.
