Classroom News - Year 3

Term 3
The children have settled into what has been a very busy start to Term 3. It was so lovely to see so many grandparents visit the Year 3 classrooms last week. The children really loved having so many visitors and we thank them for making the day so wonderful.
Homework
This term we will not be providing formal homework. However, we do expect that the students will read for 20 minutes or so each night - reading to self, as well as reading with and to others. We would like them to record what they have read each night in their reading log and these will need to be handed in to the classroom teachers each Friday for checking.
In addition, all students will still have access to Study Ladder, as well as Prodigy and Matific, where we hope they will engage with number facts, tables and revision or topics covered in class.
Gymnastics
We have super talented gymnasts in Year 3, with all students showing skill and flair in static balance, bar work, tumbling, climbing and walking on balance beams, just to name a few activities.
Wednesday mornings are very exciting times for Year 3 as we catch the bus to travel up the hill to the gymnastics centre, and we are very grateful for the opportunity to attend these classes with the very patient and enthusiastic, Mr O'Hara. These lessons will run for 3 more weeks.
In The Classroom
Our current Religion unit, Eucharist: Jesus is With Us, fits very well alongside the First Holy Communion program that many of our children are attending each Sunday. The unit looks in detail at the parts of the Mass and how Jesus is present with us during the Eucharistic celebration. It presents the Mass as central to the life of the community.
In English we are reading lots of books about journeys around Australia, linking in with our Geography unit Places are Similar and Different. At present we are looking at places within Australia. One of the texts we are reading is Are We There Yet? by Alison Lester. We are also working hard in our Literacy groups, focusing on monitoring our reading during our reading lessons and working on our speeches for St Joseph's Cup in our writing time. This week we will begin thinking about how we make inferences when we read.
In Maths we have completed 2 weeks of estimating and measuring area using informal and formal units. This week we began working with fractions and the students are enjoying their interactive and hands on activities.
The Science unit for Term 3 is Feathers, Fur or Leaves. Our students will be exploring the features of living things, and discovering the living things that can be grouped together.
In Visual Art, the children have begun sketches of Australia's BIG things e.g. The Big Pineapple, The Big Banana etc
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
Please keep our First Holy Communion candidates in your prayers as they prepare for this very special Sacrament this weekend.
