Year 5 Excursion to Sovereign Hill
Sienna D 5K
On Wednesday 1 May, the Year 5 students went to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat which was where many people travelled to during the Gold Rush Era in the 1850s. We learnt about the hardships during this era and how the people lived in the harsh conditions. At the ‘education session’, we got to dress up in clothes worn in the Colonial years, write with ink and play one of their games. My highlight of the day was when the tour guide melted and melded the pure gold, which was worth $180,000. We even had the opportunity to purchase confectionery and gifts at Sovereign Hill. We learnt lots of new, interesting facts and had an awesome excursion.

As part of our integrated studies topic ‘Colonial Australia’, the Year 5 students visited Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. We were shown how Australians lived through the Gold Rush and we were taught prospecting ways of how gold was found and made. My highlight of the day was having a tour guide take us through the dark, gloomy mines and seeing how gold was mined. Some of us were also lucky enough to find a few specks of gold when panning. We also had the chance to buy gifts and candy at the sweet shop. We learnt lots of interesting facts and had an enjoyable day.
ANZAC Day Reflection
During our ANZAC service, Mrs Crisara talked about the role indigenous Australians played during times of war even though they were not recognized as Australian citizens until 1967. One of our families sent an article outlining the fascinating history of a Cumberland student’s great grandfather who was an Indigenous Australian who served as an ANZAC during World War 1. It is very important to recognise all Australians who gave their lives to ensure our safety and peace for the future.
Here is an excerpt from the article:
Alfred Jackson Coombs was a Watjaboluk man born at Dimboola in the western Victoria Mallee. He enlisted on 19 May 1916. His younger brother, Private Willie Coombs also enlisted. Both embarked from Melbourne for the Western Front on the HMAT Orsova on 1 August 1916 and fought in legendary battles.
Year 6 Poetry
My Family
My family is a giant mountain.
My mother is a cave, a retreat from reality.
She’ll protect you from the snow storms and will always be there.
Me and my brother are the mountain climbers, persistent to reach the top, to succeed our quest.
My father is our gear and ropes, helping us to complete our task, and making it so much easier.

Morning Rush
I wake up in the morning, with a great big rush.
I hear my mum calling, “BRUSH! BRUSH! BRUSH!”
I tell her I brushed two seconds earlier,
And she then told me, to put go on a warmer.
Can this day get any worse?
Seriously, it’s like a curse.
I told her I can get ready in the blink of an eye.
She said, “If that happens, I’ll surely die!”
To prove her wrong, I rush like a storm, and come down like thunder.
Only to notice, I made a blunder.
Mum looks at me and shakes her head.
Wrong uniform again, my day ended before it began.
