Earth Hour
Before the holidays, Aitken College participated in the worldwide movement, Earth Hour! Originally organised by World Wide Fund for Nature, the event has grown to include individuals, communities and businesses all over the world. The aim of the initiative is to raise awareness about minimising our electricity usage as a way to show our commitment to protecting the environment. On Friday 29 March Aitken participants shut off all non-essential electronics for one hour as a symbol of that commitment…and to show how easy it is to minimise how much energy we use. Blinds were opened to provide sunlight, eliminating the need for electronic lights. Windows and doors were opened to let the breeze cool rooms instead of running the air conditioners. These are just a couple examples of how all of us could be incorporating energy-saving strategies into our everyday lives. Hopefully, Aitken’s participation in Earth Hour has raised awareness for students and families about energy consumption and effects on the environment.
