Student News and Excursions

Media Studies Excursion

How often is it that an entire subject full of students across multiple year levels gets to go on an excursion? Well, on Friday June 21st, all current St Joseph’s College Media students had the opportunity to go to Melbourne to take part in the inaugural Australian Media Youth Festival.

Leaving very early in the morning, our school arrived on time, even beating most Melbourne schools to make it to the opening session of the festival on time.

During the day, students interested in Media had the opportunity to hear from industry experts and documentary filmmakers, as well as take part in several interactive workshops. Students in Yr 9 created short stop motion animation videos, students in Yr 10 learned about creating ethical content and how to represent subjects with dignity in the mass media, as well as Yr 11 students brushing up on their video editing skills in readiness for creating major projects in VCE.

Overall, the day was a huge success, with students also getting the opportunity to look around RMIT University at their media studies facilities.

Hopefully the day brought students an opportunity to learn more about the media and possible future career options

Enterprise Week

The first week back from the winter break was filled with excitement about Enterprise Week.

Lots of activities were planned.

Students were able to participate in quizzes on the daily notices, making name tags in the wood or metal room, St. Joes' Shark Tank and lolly kebab making to finish off the week.

Lots of great opportunities and fun to be had by all. Thank you to all those who got into the spirit and had fun.

County Court Judge Visits

Legal Studies Classes

On Friday the 19th of July we welcomed Justice Jane Patrick to our College as part of ‘Enterprise Week’. Justice Patrick has spent many years as a County Court judge both in Melbourne and Bendigo. She inspired and engaged our Legal Studies students by retelling cases, breaking down court protocol and even explaining the way that judges dress and why.

This opportunity was extremely valuable to our students as it gave them the opportunity to talk directly to a judge, ask questions and also learn from her experiences.

Melbourne Careers Camp

This year’s Year 10 Careers Camp held in Melbourne was very successful.

Students and staff met at 6.45am on Wednesday 17th and headed off to Melbourne  extremely sleepy but also very excited.  Over the two and half days students attended 4 workshops that they had chosen in many different career areas, such as:

Melbourne University, Box Hill TAFE, RMIT, ChinChin, Hotel School of Melbourne, Ella Lucas, Headmasters, Bendigo Bank, Melbourne University Dentistry School, Carlton Football Club, Masters Builders, Automotive School of Excellence, Port Authority, Victorian Parliament, Australian Catholic University, CFMEU, Clarke Hopkins Clarke Architect, Marvel Stadium, Victorian Police, The Big Issue, ACS, Channel 9, Whitehouse Institute of Design, Victoria University, Racing Victoria, Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, William Angliss, Academy of Interactive Entertainment and JMC Academy to name a few.

In between workshops and in the evenings students managed to fit in a bit of shopping, we visited the Queen Victoria Night Market, Ice Skating and spent an enjoyable 45 minutes riding the Melbourne Star.

Our accommodation for the two days was a Melbourne University Hall of Residence – Ormond College and we cannot thank them enough for the hospitality.  We all enjoyed eating in the dining hall which reminded us of Hogwarts from the Harry Potter movies.

Thank you to the staff who attended and helped to make the three days flow so smoothly.  And thank you to the students who have said that it was the best camp ever and they learnt a lot about their pathway.

VTAC Careers Expo and Tis

On Wednesday night all students in the area had the opportunity to attend the VTAC Careers Expo held at Rich River Golf Club now in it’s 3rd Year.  A presentation was made to students and their parents about VTAC and the process for applying to universities.  Everyone was then free to walk around the exhibition and talk to the numerous universities and TAFE colleges in attendance as well as Centrelink, Moama Bowling Club, MEGT Rich River Golf Club, Greenham 7 Sons etc to see what employment opportunities they have available to them.

If was pleasing to see so many families and students in attendance.

Following on from this, the Year 12 students attended the annual TIS (Tertiary Information Session).  Students were spoken to by the Institutions re the application process, the importance of applying for scholarships etc.  They were then given the opportunity to talk individually to representatives from the many universities and TAFE colleges in Victoria.

Students and parents are reminded that Mrs Crossman the Pathways Coordinator is available for appointments to assist them with the VTAC application process.
