Polyfest Celebrations in Hampton Park

A number of our students performed at the Polyfest Celebration held at Hampton Park Primary School on Friday 23 August. Lia Kennach and Esther Kennar performed a beautiful and graceful Samoan Siva, whilst a number of our junior boys performed the Haka.

Congratulations Siopu Aso, Jemal Dean, Teinaki Dean, Wilson Kennar, Christian Lealofi, Eli Posi, Andrew Roberts, Mark Silili, Owen Taunuu, Frankie Tinifu and Elia Malaeulu.

Each of our students represented Hampton Park Secondary College and their cultures with pride. The primary school students were in awe of the performances – particularly the Haka.

Transition Classes for 2020

This week, Year 7 students in 2020 from the local primary schools participated in transition classes at Hampton Park Secondary College.

Each student took part in a combination of a Science class – using a Van de Graaff generator to create some science magic tricks, playing with fire bubbles and looking at different bacteria under the light microscopes; a Technology class – making working circuits or a physical education class – playing a variety of games.

As the end of the year approaches this becomes an incredibly exciting time for the primary school students who are preparing to leave the safety of a smaller school environment.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Mr Billy Jessop for his organisation of this program and Mr Mahon, Ms Glenn, Ms Johnson, Mr Cusack, Mr Cram and Mr D’Auria for supporting the students in the classroom in this transition program.

HPSC Alumni

Hampton Park Secondary College celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2016.

Over the past 33 years, thousands of students have graduated from the College, continuing with further studies, entering into the workforce, travelling and perhaps having their own family. We would love to know what you are doing and for this reason we are in the beginning phases of establishing an Alumni of past students.

If you have graduated from HPSC or know someone who has, please ask them to follow our Facebook page

https://www.facebook.com/hamptonparksecondarycollege/.

There is a survey link for alumni to respond to some questions. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sports Peer Mentoring

Throughout the term, the Sports Peer Mentors have continued to support our local primary schools – River Gum, Hampton Park and Coral Park – with their Interschool sporting program. The students have been learning their new winter sports to be able to assist with the coaching and umpiring of these.

The students are showing amazing leadership and maturity in their roles.

If you are a student in Year 8-10 next year please consider taking on the role as a Peer Sport Mentor.

Applications will open up early next term after the first Value Assemblies. This role provides a wonderful opportunity to develop skills in team work, leadership and communication.

School for Student Leadership 2020

This year Hampton Park Secondary College successfully applied for the School for Student Leadership, with positions made available for 2 males and 3 female students for Term 4 2020.

The School for Student Leadership (SSL) is a Victorian Department of Education and Training school specialising in leadership education for students in Year 9. Their vision is to create a community where people are passionate, informed and active global citizens by providing opportunities for personal, community and leadership development.

During the nine week term at Gnurad Gundidj the students learn to live independently, without access to technologies (except for the platforms required for learning) their families and junk food. It is an extremely challenging program which promotes personal growth and development.

This once in a lifetime opportunity is open to current Year 8 students. Information will be provided at the next Values Assembly and applications will open after this.

Rappers at HPSC

A number of Year 7 – 12 students have engaged in Rap Workshops with Mista Monk, a recording artist, in a program that was established by Hampton Park Library.

Over the past several weeks the students have been trialling different beats and creating lyrics based on varying themes. They had their final session earlier in the week in which they were able to create a final recorded product.

This project enabled the students to collaborate together, make mistakes and learn from them, use their words to share their feelings and record a catchy and clever rap. I hope that they continue to develop these skills.
