Library News

This term in the libraries we are looking towards Week 5 and the celebration of Book Week.

This year’s Book Week theme “Reading is my secret power” encourages students to think about the power of reading.

The power of reading cannot be underestimated: it opens us to whole new worlds and experiences; it helps us to relax and de-stress; it improves our focus and concentration; it broadens our knowledge and makes us more empathetic. It can be life changing. So for these reasons (and many others), it is important that boys are encouraged to read. Just like physical exercise, 20 minutes a day is all that is needed to start seeing the benefits!

There will be the usual Book Weeks activities planned for Primary and Middle school students, as well as our regular morning quiz and Guessing Competition for all students. There are a couple of new competitions. For the artistically inclined, a competition to design a new Book Week poster. For those who like a bit of a challenge, a competition to work out what books teachers are reading based on one clue only.

As this is a non-dress up year, primary students have been invited to send in a photo of themselves creatively addressing the theme. This might be a photo of themselves reading in an interesting location, or in an interesting position, or doing something that shows the power of reading. The possibilities are endless! These photos will be put into a PowerPoint display and shown at the Book Week Assembly. Can photos be emailed to me by the end of Week 3 please.

Finally, a reminder that Book Week signals the time when the Premier’s Reading Challenge closes. We are asking that all students participating in the challenge hand in their forms by the Friday of Book Week, which is August 23.
