Primary Co-Curricular Report

Term 3 Co-Curricular began in the first week back to school. All Primary teams were back in action and the results were mixed. There were some excellent performances, some great sportsmanship and regrettably, a few incidents that need attention.

The Year 3/4/5 Football team lost by a few goals to St Ignatius at St Ignatius. The boys tried their best but couldn’t quite get the job done. The Year 6/7 team lost a close match against Rostrevor. Four goals down at one point, the boys rallied to get in front but were just pipped at the post, going down by 2 points.

The Primary A Soccer team travelled to Cardijn and went down 3-0. From all reports, it took the boys a half to get moving and pick up the pace of the game, but with no subs it was always going to be tough to get the win. The Primary B team travelled to Trinity and scored their first win of the season. After some tough battles, the boys came away with a well-deserved victory. Definitely a reward for perseverance. The Year 3/4/5 soccer teams played close neighbours, St Paul's. Both teams won their matches. I want to congratulate Owen (Yr 4) and Daniel (Yr 3) who stepped up without hesitation, to assist the undermanned St Paul's teams. A terrific gesture, for sure!

Both Year 6/7 basketball teams suffered narrow losses in Week 1. Attendance at training requires some attention from this group as many players have dropped off in their effort to attend. The Year 4/5 team won a close game against Nailsworth by three points. This team continues to perform well and grind out some good results.

As mentioned in the opening of this article, there are a few areas of concern that have been reported to me in the past week.

The first is attendance at training, particularly in Year 6/7 Soccer and Basketball. A number of boys have dropped off in their attendance at these sessions. It is essential that boys attend, not only to work on skills or tactics, but to receive information and integrate into a team environment or plan. The quality of training is diminished when numbers don’t allow for activities to proceed. It is also highly unfair to those honouring their commitment. Many families are not providing the coaches with any notification which leaves them unsure of intentions or availability. Please honour the commitment made to the team by getting to training for the rest of the term.

Parent Spectator Code of Conduct

I was extremely disappointed to be informed that members of the Blackfriars football community were harassing and abusing young umpires following the Year 6/7 game on the weekend. No spectators should have negative interactions with the officials of any sport. If you have issue with the referees or umpire, please direct your concerns to the coach or manager of the team. Under no circumstances should parents engage in an agitated or aggressive manner to the officials and give them ‘advice’. Umpires are very important to the school. Abusing them does not help their development, nor does it nurture their interest in officiating. As adults, you are role models to the children – please set a good example for them to follow no matter the result of the game.

Unfortunately the actions of a few have had a significant impact on the umpires involved and also embarrassed the playing group and the school as the incident was witnessed by numerous parties.

Please refer to this extract from Page 5 of the Blackfriars Co-Curricular Handbook about the expectations of spectators at school fixtures.
