Assistant Principals' Report

How 'Learning Walks and Talks' Will Help Students

Our Principal team has recently launched a new initiative called Learning Walks and Talks. These "talks" will allow us to regularly observe teaching practices in classrooms and check-in with students by asking them a series of questions regarding their learning.

Questions to students include:

  • What are you learning and why?
  • How are you doing?
  • How do you know?
  • How can you improve?
  • Where do you go for help when you have a question?

Walks and Talks will help us obtain a snapshot of how our teachers are making a difference to each student. These talks will ensure students are engaged in their learning, understand what they are expected to learn and are supported in their needs.

Observation will be in an unobtrusive manner and will occur during a limited five-to-eight minute timeframe (but replicated many times in different classrooms to get a complete picture of the school's performance and teaching practices).

At DSC we continually promote a culture of feedback and collaboration, and these Walks and Talks are another way that we can deliver high-impact teaching practices in every classroom, for every student, right across the College.
