R U OK Day

R U Ok day is a national day of action; dedicated to encouraging each of us to ask our family, friends and colleagues the question R U OK? The day is about promoting, inspiring and celebrating connections with one another and recognising that this is important for our mental health and wellbeing.

Last Thursday the students participated in a range of activities. This was captured by one of our Yr. 11 students, Anna McClintock, who took photos and reported on the meaning of the day.

Are you OK?

R U OK day is a reminder for people to ask family, friends and colleagues the question, "R U OK?", in a meaningful way to show you care about them. Connecting with others regularly in a genuine way is something everyone can do to make a difference to anyone who might be finding things hard.

At Mordialloc College we acknowledged the day by encouraging each other to talk with one another and connecting with others through various lunchtime activities.  Students had the opportunity to have their photo taken with friends with Rex, the R U Ok mascot. Students also wrote down on sticky notes how they support a friend who may be feeling alone or isolated.  Students also played the Giant Connect 4 and Giant Jenga with Janet from KYS (Kingston Youth Services), and the students went looking around the school for a number of hidden golden tickets.  Each ticket had a clue to break the secret message : A conversation can change a life & You have a friend in me.

We can all make a difference by keeping an eye out for friends and checking in with others when we notice a change in someone’s behaviour. Changes in mood, sleep patterns,  noticing when others are withdrawing from friends and family or conflict with others may call for us to ask the question R U Ok?
