FRIENDS OF FCC ANNUAL REPORT 2017 - 2018

2017 - 18 has been a busy & successful year for Friends of FCC. Our fundraising activities for 2017 included a silent auction at the Chefs Dinner, refreshments served at Big Fish & Peter Pan, participation in the Scout raffle, when 3 lucky tickets sold by the school won prizes, and our annual uniform sale. Including parent donations paid as part of fees, over $14 000 has been raised.

The Small Grants program gave out over $11 000 to a range of projects including a new multi-station fitness centre for the gym, scientific calculators for loan to students from the library, a short throw lens for projecting backdrops in the theatre & trees and plants for around the school.

We were really pleased to provide a grant initiated by a Year 7 student for a stop-motion film making studio.

During the year we worked to provide more opportunity for parents to meet informally & find out what’s happening around the school.  We are very fortunate that Maria Bawden is a regular attendee. At our first meeting for 2018, she told us about the new curriculum and timetable changes that took place at the start of the year, as well as keeping us informed about other developments around the school & in the Footscray Learning Precinct. It was a great chance for the many new parents who attended the meeting to ask questions & provide comments on their students' experiences as they start secondary school.

In 2017/18 we have also had guest speakers from the teaching staff, who have told us about the programs and activities that they organise. Thanks to Jak Dunstan, who talked about his experience of studying horticulture so that he can start providing horticulture classes for our students, hopefully leading to VET Horticulture being included in the curriculum. Also, Tim Beare told us about the STEAM program that he coordinates, and took us for a tour of the Environmental Science centre to see the wind turbines that were partially funded by a small grant. We were able to see how much work the Year 9 students had done to install them, and how they will continue to provide learning opportunities for energy & environment in the future.

Thanks to Daniel Micallef for attending our AGM and telling us about everything that goes on in the library.

We hope to have a guest speaker at one meeting each term, usually the second meeting - stay tuned for who’s speaking next.

Thanks to Maria Bawden & Chris Lovelock, for their continued support of our efforts. Special thanks to Barbara Braun for all her work as Secretary for several years.

Thanks to everyone who has been involved with Friends for the past year. Whether that’s attending every meeting, or only attending meetings occasionally to hear our guest speakers,  Some people can’t make meetings at all but helped out at our fundraising activities or with donations of goods or services and helped make this a successful fundraising year. It’s been great to have so many new parents attending meetings this year.

Meeting dates for Term 2:

May 8th and June 12th - Meetings take place at 7pm in the Staff Room, and new members are always welcome.
