PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

A message from the Principal

VCE INFORMATION NIGHT

Our VCE Night was very well attended and successful and I appreciate the wonderful feedback received.  I would like to thank parents, students, representatives from various Institutions and our VCE teachers who came along to respond to student questions and give details of the various subjects and courses on offer.  Thorough research enables the best decision to be made by students.

Students’ final course submissions for 2015 were due last week.

VTAC

Once again it is VTAC application time for our Year 12 cohort.

It was a pleasure to see so many Year 12 parents attend the VTAC Information Night last Thursday.

Mr Mest, Mr Noble and Ms Felmingham presented a very thorough talk on the application process.  Key dates were given and again it is very important to know and understand what is required so that assistance can be given to each student.

I wish our Year 12’s all the best with their selections of tertiary courses for 2015.

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS

The Tournament of Minds Challenge was held on the 16th and 17th of August at Deakin University.  McKinnon had 4 teams in the event this year.  The Maths/Engineering team received an Honours Award and the Applied Technology team won their division.  They will now proceed to the State Finals at La Trobe University on 14 September to challenge the State title.  Congratulations to the following team members:

Luka Cote, Andy Kim, Eriks Stepanuks (Year 7) Luka Duggan, Neg Hamedani Zadeh, (Team Captain) Alex Hunter and Phoenix Loquet (Year 8)

Congratulations to Mr Killeen, Ms Mauger, Ms Krommydas for their assistance and to Mr Perry for his team’s success but more importantly for organizing the entire tournament of minds event for McKinnon. Well done to all the students who participated.  You were great ambassadors for McKinnon Secondary College.

SCIENCE WEEK

Science was celebrated this week with tremendous activities, enthusiasm and challenging problems.

I congratulate Mrs Sweeney and all the Science Faculty staff who continue to inspire and create a love of learning in science.  Enthusiastic participation was evident in all the activities including survivor, the rocket launch and inspirational guest speakers.

WINTER CONCERT

Congratulations to the Manager of Instrumental Music, Mr Martin West and the Manager of Classroom Music, Ms Megan Papworth and the Music Faculty for their wonderful celebration of music held at the Robert Blackwood Hall last night.

It was indeed a spectacular event that showcased the musical talents of our staff and students.  Concerts like these allow students’ talent to be recognised and celebrated!  Thank you to all the siblings, parents, grandparents and friends who attended.  As always the extended McKinnon family was there in force.

Well done to all involved!

2014 STATE SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR

The Victorian State Schools Spectacular will be held at Hisense Arena on Saturday 13 September.  Tickets are now on sale through Ticketmaster.com.au.

We wish Alexandra Samulenok (Year 12) and Krystal La (Year 10) all the very best in this production.

STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE - AMBULANCE COVER ARRANGEMENTS

The following is a reminder about the accident policy situation at McKinnon Secondary College:

  • Parents/Guardians of students, who do not have student accident insurance, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance/transport and any other transport costs;

Also Parents/Guardians can purchase insurance policies from commercial insurers.

The Department of Education recommends that Parents/Guardians seek assistance in this matter with their insurance broker or find a suitable personal accident insurer in the Yellow Pages or online.
