School Council President

Celebrating Principals' Day

Today (Friday August 5) is the day that Victoria celebrates Principals' Day. It's an opportunity to recognise the contribution that principals and assistant principals make in schools.

On behalf of ACPS students, staff, families and the school council, I'd like to thank Mrs Thornton for the amazing job she's done recently in leading the school and creating and maintaining such a positive atmosphere for the whole school community. She not only "talks the talk" on positivity, she also "walks the walk".

You may have heard of the expression "herding cats" which refers to the difficulty of attempting to organise individual cats in to an organised herd. I like to compare the role of a principal to that of a cat herder...except not only do you have to herd cats (students), you also have to herd teachers and families while trying to ensure the cats are learning at the same time.

(If you'd like to see an example of cat herding in action, visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_MaJDK3VNE

It's a difficult job and Mrs Thornton has done it wonderfully, not only with the day-to-day running of the school, but also with her work to encourage and support school-wide positive behaviours. She's introduced (and in some cases, reintroduced) programs to recognise and reward students who are willing to have a go and challenge themselves.

As an example, if she'd come to me to ask whether I thought that kids would be keen to (a) wake up and get to school early, (b) in winter, to (c) run laps around the oval, I would have told her she was crazy. Luckily she didn't ask me and the Kilometre Club has been a huge success. It's obviously great for student fitness but is also an outlet for excess energy before school and empowers the school leaders who run the program.

The Y.A.G.A. (You Are Great Awards) are a great example of rewarding positive attitudes and behaviours. It seems like a simple thing, but it works so well in both acknowledging positive behaviours as well as encouraging the community to recognise positive people and nominate them for the awards.

I'd like to also recognise and thank Mrs Dyos for her work as Principal over a number of years. She's passionate about the school and its students and led the school through some challenging times during COVID.
