Co-curricular - Junior Sport

Welcome back to Semester 2. I hope that everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing term break and found some time to spend with family. Although the weather wasn’t the best, there were some great opportunities to get outside and move around, especially if you enjoy skiing.

Thursday 23 June, the second last day of Term 2, the Junior School competed in its annual House Athletics Carnival. Thankfully, the weather leading up to the day was mild, allowing Breen Oval to dry out. A special thank you to Mr Jansen, our Groundsman, for all his efforts in preparing the track so that the boys were able to compete and excel on the day.

The competition was hotly contested with all houses performing well. The scores were very close with no more than 20 points separating the teams throughout the day. Eventually, it came down to the last set of races, the age relays. This ultimately saw Crichton come out on top, narrowly beating Hanrahan and Berg for top honours on the day. Well done to all the boys in Crichton House for their hard work and dedication. I extend these well wishes to all the boys who attended and participated; you created a fantastic atmosphere and made the carnival enjoyable for all involved.

There were two records broken at this year’s carnival:

  • Xavier Khoury (Year 5)
11 Years 100m 13.79 sec (old record 14.16 sec set by Zac Bechara in 2020)

  • Anthony Mastoris (Year 6)
12 Years High Jump 1.39m (old record 1.38m set by Spencer Ling in 2016)

Well done to these boys on their outstanding performances. Congratulations also to our Age Champions for 2022:

  • 10 years – Alexander Gomesis (Year 5)
  • 11 years – Xavier Khoury (Year 5)
  • 11 years – Charles Bechara (Year 6)
  • 12 years – Matthew Sarlas (Year 6)

I would also like to show my appreciation to all the parents and carers who took time out of their busy schedules to support their sons and all the boys in the Junior School on the day. It was great to have a strong contingent of supporters cheering on the boys. It has been a missing feature from our carnivals for a while now, and it was great to have you all there. Lastly, to all the Junior School staff, a huge thank you! Your tireless efforts on the day covering all the jobs are what allows our carnivals to be so successful. I know that our Junior School community will join me in singing your praises for all your hard work.

I will announce the Athletics Squad shortly. The Athletics season begins at the conclusion of Winter sport, and I will announce the Athletics Squad soon. The season is short with only a few weekend carnivals in the lead up to the IPSHA carnival. Training sessions will be held in the mornings before school on the back ovals. Boys will be informed of the times and days they will be required.

With our return to school for Term 3, we are back into Winter sport. We have a quick sprint to the end of the season with only three rounds remaining. The last scheduled round, Round 10, will be held on Saturday 6 August. After this date, there will be no further training sessions or fixtures for Winter sports. Boys involved in Athletics, Debating and Junior School Social Justice will continue training, with the rest of the Junior School on hiatus. Term 4 will see the recommencement of Summer sport.

I look forward to seeing the boys back out on the fields this week for training and representing the College again on Saturday.
