Glen Gerreyn from the HopeFull Institute works with the Year 11s as part of their Encounter

From the Deputy Principal Pastoral Care, Nick Jones

This week our school was very fortunate to host Glen Gerreyn from The HopeFull Institute. This was Glen’s third visit to our school, and I know the Year 11 cohort along with the parents who attended his evening seminar gained a lot of insight and inspiration from his presentations.

While working with the Year 11s, Glen encouraged them to develop an understanding of their strengths and their passions in life. He gave some excellent insight into how the students can harness their passion and how to implement an action plan which will assist them in realizing their goals and ambitions.

During the evening seminar to parents, Glen described some excellent strategies to assist their children to thrive, flourish and succeed in achieving the goals that they set themselves. Some of these strategies included:

  • Providing feedback to your child which praises and encourages the process rather than the outcome. When commenting on an excellent test score, instead of saying ‘Well done – you’re so smart!’ you could say “Well done – all the hard work  you put into studying and preparing for that test really paid off.”
  • Role-model a growth mindset. Tackle difficult tasks with your child and demonstrate a resilient attitude.
  • Providing your child with opportunities to experience many different activities. Take them out of their comfort zone and support them to try new things.

As we move into the second half of Term 1. I would like to thank parents and guardians for assisting us to maintain the high standards of presentation we expect from our students. There are a small number of students who believe it is appropriate to not wear their school uniform correctly when arriving to and departing from school. The John Wollaston school uniform is an attractive and distinctive symbol of the values we hold true. It is important that students understand that they are ambassadors of our whole school community and the school uniform should be worn correctly at all times.

All the best.
