Primary Inter-House Swimming Carnival, March 2019
Inter-House Swimming Carnival
Our Inter-House Swimming Carnival held on Thursday 7 March at Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre was a huge success. Well done to all students for representing their House with pride and swimming with such determination and spirit.
There is much about our strong culture at John Wollaston that we tend to take for granted. I was touched by the number of parents and members of the public that commented on the supportive and caring nature of our students. The best example of this was the encouragement and applause given to those students who finished and placed in the latter half of each race. We react positively to effort and determination – with the all important growth mindset in all that we do, academic or co-curricular.
I congratulate every student for their excellent participation in a wonderful carnival. Thank you again to Primary Physical Education Specialist, Melanie Fowler for a wonderful event. Best of luck to our Inter-School Swimming Team competing at Newman College on Thursday 21 March.

Canberra Tour
The Canberra Tour Parent Information Session was held today. We are fortunate that our students can participate in many educational programs focusing on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Govenment recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their civics and citizenship program. To assist families in meeting the cost of the tour the Australian Government contributes funding of $240 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program towards those costs. This rebate is paid directly to the School after the Tour. Canberra is becoming busier each year, as more schools realise how valuable the tour is for all concerned. I look forward to another memorable trip with a group of very excited Year 6 students when we depart on Sunday 19 May, returning Thursday 23 May.
Identity Day
This year we are modifying the usual concept of Harmony Day with a re-purposing of this event to Identity Day, to be held on Friday 22 March. All year groups will inquire into aspects of their identity as part of the trans-disciplinary theme, Who we are. The day will begin with an assembly, led by the Class Representatives in Years 4 to 6. Families are welcome to attend to celebrate the unique qualities of each of our John Wollaston students.
Amana Living Intergenerational Project
Last Friday, a film crew from Channel 7's Today Tonight attended our regular visit to the Amana Living - Thomas Scott Hostel, Camillo. The journalist interviewed residents and a few of our students and we were so proud of the way they displayed such character and humility. This project has been a wonderful experience and we look forward to sharing more with our school community in the near future. Follow our Facebook page to be alerted when the segment will be aired on Today Tonight!
