A Word from the Principal

A warm welcome to our community.

We have had a wonderful fortnight at Weeden Heights.  The students have settled into school and I am impressed with the work work being done in the senior school around famous Australians.  Watch out for our 'Night of the Notables' next term.  The preps are finding their way and developing routines as well.  There is a great buzz in our learning zones!

While things are settling down with our fires in Gippsland,  it was disturbing to hear about the tragic event in New Zealand.  A few of our families originate from NZ and many have connections.  I know that a several of you have experienced loss as well.  You are all in our thoughts during this challenging and emotional time.

The wellbeing section of the newsletter also contains some support material to assist you in managing your children during traumatic events.  It is from the Department of Education and may be of some use.

School Council

On Monday night, School Council inducted its new members through the AGM.  Congratulations to the school councillors who were elected into the following positions:

  • Mrs Kirsty White – School Council President
  • Mrs Karen Jansen  - Vice President
  • Mrs Emily Zhang– Treasurer

We also welcomed: Mr Daniel Rodgers, Mr Simon Billingham, Mr Gerry Mulholland, Mr Gavin Hodgins, Mr Paul Keeghan along with existing members, Mr David Saville and Mrs Nicole Seneviratne who has served for many years.

The school council also operates with sub committees and their main role is to advise council through their research and investigations.   Parents are more than welcome join sub committees and you don’t need to commit to being on school council.

Please come and speak with us if you are interested in being involved in a sub- committee or to be co-opted onto school council in one of the vacant positions.  There is one parent position left and two DET positions vacant.

The council would greatly appreciate input from the wider community.

Prep 2019 Tours and Enrolments

We have had many calls and visits already for information regarding enrolments at Weeden Heights Primary School for 2019.  Tours and enrolment information is available now.  Positions are filling fast so if you are an existing family, please complete your enrolment form and hand it in at the office.

If you know anyone who requires assistance with 2020 placements, please direct them to call our office to book a tour date and time.  If you are one of our current families then please remember that you also need to enroll early as well.   Thank you for helping us with this process.

Parent Helpers Workshop

On Tuesday we had our first group of keen parents in our ‘helping in the classroom’ parent workshops.  It is wonderful to hear about an enthusiastic group of parents who are wanting to further support their own child and others.  The focus for next week will focus on writing in the classroom.   Thanks to Ms  McLaren, our literacy leader and Mrs Heatley for running these lessons.

Parent Association

Thank-you to the wonderful parents who have shown great interest in our PFA.  The parents have met to conduct their AGM and have organised all the events for the year.  Our new co Presidents are Mrs Abbey Wakerley and Mrs Terri Martin.  Thanks to Mrs Kim Jasper for taking the role of secretary and Mrs Natasha Moulton as our treasurer.   There is also a fabulous group of parents who form a core PFA group.

The parents welcome anyone who would like to join them to support the school and most importantly our students.

Currently, the PFA are about to run a special food day on the last day of term.  Stay tuned for the up-coming events.

The next meeting is on Tuesday night so you are all welcome!

End of Term Assembly

Parents are reminded that this term will conclude on Friday 5 April at 2.30pm.  Please note the early closing time.  There will be a short final assembly at 2.15pm which you are welcome to attend on the day.

Term two will commence on Tuesday 23 April (EASTER Tuesday).

I hope that you all have a very Happy Easter and enjoy a wonderful two week break.

Until next time,

Ms Kylie Campbell
