Wellbeing 2020

Mike Tarleton - Assistant Principal (Engagement & Wellbeing)

As a teaching team, we met as a Professional Learning Community (PLC) last week to discuss Team Points and how we can develop consistency across all teams at LNPS.

This was of course an opportunity for our staff to have a little fun too... we're not in the slightest bit competitive!

OK, maybe a little competitive!!!

Embedding positive actions like empathy and gratitude into our everyday subconscious are challenges that we face as a school. We want to foster a community where everyone belongs and feels connected in a climate that reflects our school values - Respect, Care & Concern, Honesty and Pursuit of Excellence.

We were all in agreement that our school value of Honesty was often the most difficult to see in action, especially when we want to see and acknowledge positive behaviours. We agreed to celebrate the HONESTY that students have to themselves - when they find situations challenging, including learning tasks, we want our students to ask for help!

We want to see our school values being displayed authentically and many of our students are intrinsically motivated and understand that they are picking up litter or saying hello to people because it is the right thing to do, not just because points are on offer. A couple of recent role models to inspire us include Jaimann (Y7) and Jacob (Y4) for going out of their way to help pack equipment away after school.

'Kindness costs nothing but gives us so much in return.'

When working with children and young people, we are fully aware that we will always be a work in progress - mistakes happen along the way and that provides opportunities for significant learning and growth. Maintaining a positive approach to our interactions with others is at the centre of genuine Care & Concern. When these relationships fall short of our expectations, having the support of our families is paramount to restorative justice.

Acknowledging our mistakes, apologising for them and accepting whatever consequences are given enable us to move forward quickly. Having the consistent support of our families is essential and very much appreciated.

'Lockleys North students understand how the choices they make affect themselves and others.'

We are very lucky at Lockleys North to have so many amazing young people. You are probably almost tired of me stating how awesome our Play Leaders are but I will not apologise for saying it again! These young people are having FUN and know that helping others is a thing to be recognised, consistently giving up their own lunchtimes to make a significant difference to our people. What these young citizens may not realise is that they are also guiding our younger students towards becoming future Play Leaders who will appreciate what they were given and have the desire to pay it forward

Hearing the laughter and seeing the smiling happy faces of our Reception students as they play parachute games is a joy to behold! Our Play Leaders Ella, Eleni, Elena and Amelia have made this happen for four lunchtimes every week!

'I like it because we get to go under the parachute and get to play doggy, doggy, who's got a bone.' Livvy (R8)

'I like going under the parachute and I like playing popcorn. The Play Leaders make up good games and I love having fun.' Quinn (R8)

'I think it's great! The Play Leaders are good. My favourite game is popcorn because we get to wave the parachute around.' Noah (R8)

Watching our Year 1/2 students dancing about in a silent disco initially two lunches a week - appreciation to Hannah, Kaitlyn, Elsa, Milli, Indi and Tayla who have made this happen! Almost 25 students have joined them each day that TikTok 'til You Drop has been running that they've added a third lunchtime!

'I really like the songs in the 'Tik Tok 'til You Drop' and I have fun dancing around!'

Aveille (M5)

'I like listening to the music and dancing. I wish we could do it every day!'

Lilah (M5)

'I like having different sports to play and having goals to use outside. I think having Active Lunch is amazing!'

George (M5)

Playing indoor soccer or penalty shootouts at least twice a week and having provision for soccer goals outside on other days is definitely appreciated by our younger students. If you have any comments, please feel free to email me and I will pass your feedback on to our Play Leaders. Mike.Tarleton884@schools.sa.edu.au.

Many of our Red Badge Play Leaders met this week to celebrate their success and investigate opportunities to expand what we do during Active Lunches.

Thank you to Noah D, Yana, Billy, Stephan and Luca for your honesty, ideas and time. We are delighted to announce additional students who have been nominated by their peers to become new Play Leaders.

Because of gaining multiple points, this shows that Grallina is capable of following all school values and motivating other teams to do better.

Eleni

We are tremendously proud of all the Grallina students and it’s a great honour to have the opportunity to be able to be role models and motivate all the Grallina students to continue doing their best!
