Year 5 - Room 2

National Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day

National Reconciliation Week runs annually from 27 May to 3 June and Sorry Day being observed on 26 May. Room 2 participated in a range of learning surrounding these events.

We watched some Behind the News clips about the Stolen Generation, Government Apology, Reconciliation Week and the Bridge Walk Anniversary. These clips provided a base point for a whole class discussion surrounding the significance and importance of recognising, respecting, empathising and appreciating the histories and culture of Indigenous and Aboriginal Australians.

Proceeding our class discussion, our school AIEO officer, Natasha Maciel, came and talked to us about our learning. Students were also given the opportunity to learn about her own family histories and ask any questions that they had.

As a learning task students were required to create a poster that represented the 2020 Reconciliation Week theme, In This Together. As a class we brainstormed all the ways we could show the theme of ‘In This Together’ as well as the colours and symbols that might help to show reconciliation. Some ideas that students produced included learning about the histories, language, flags, learning about some famous Indigenous Australians, reading Dreamtime stories, attending local events, visiting cultural landmarks, singing songs and learning about bush tucker. Students then worked in groups to produce their posters.

Breakfast Club -Volunteers Needed!

Every Tuesday before school in the undercover area, Breakfast Club provides a much-needed hot breakfast and fruit free for all students who want it. I run this together with a parent volunteer. We are looking for volunteers:

  • For additional regular support or occasional help on Tuesday mornings (always good to have a back-up in case somebody's sick), or
  • Who would be willing to take on the responsibility of regularly running  Breakfast Club on Thursday mornings.

Volunteers arrive at about 8:10 to prepare breakfast to serve from 8:25-8:40, and then have a short time of cleaning up afterward. It's a short commitment every week which is a great help to our school community. If you would be interested in helping, please contact me at school on Tuesdays or Fridays or email bronwen.speedie@education.wa.edu.au
