MCC Market Day

Recently our Year 9/10 Business Studies classes organised and hosted the inaugural MCC Market Day, during which a diverse selection of quality homemade goods and products were sold. The event proved to be a huge success.  It was heartening to witness the enthusiastic participation of numerous students. Notably, all the products were sold out before lunchtime, demonstrating the popularity of the offerings.

All the proceeds from the sales will be allocated to various charitable organisations. The girls who participated in this venture have gained valuable insights into the world of business, and their accomplishments are certainly commendable.

Year 9/10 Art Elective - Art Rage Excursion

The Year 9/10 Art elective students attended the ArtRage Exhibition at Salamanca Art Centre on Thursday 1 June. ArtRage is QVMAG’s annual exhibition showcasing the top works from young Tasmanian artists in Years 11 & 12 studying Art Production or Art Studio Practice as part of their Tasmanian Certificate of Education.

The students’ work explores themes that have inspired them throughout the year and are an invitation to reflect on how it feels to be a young person living in the world today.

Attending this exhibition provided an excellent opportunity for students to engage with the work of their contemporaries. The goal was for each student to identify one or more works they found inspiring and document it with photographs and notes to refer to in their journals. As the Year 10 students are currently producing their major works and the Year 9 students are completing their installations, it provided a good insight into the broad range of mediums and concepts available for them to explore now, and in the future if they choose to continue with Art at College.

The depth and breadth of talent on display was exceptional. A number of students were able to identify their favourite works and articulate to us all why these works appealed to them. Hannah Jager was drawn to the hyper-realistic drawing of Tyler, The Creator and Elizabeth Herzfeld loved the concept of beauty in the mundane, explored in the portrait paintings by Poppy Robinson. Lottie Groves found the small paintings by Daisy Clarkson captured energy and motion in an expressive way on their vibrant hot pink backgrounds. Phoebe Gatehouse was intrigued by the work titled “The Loneliest Generation” of a girl’s face lit up by her mobile phone, while Megan Hatendi loved the scale and ambition of a larger than life-sized figure painting. Bethany Harvey admired the painting of masks by Freya Pennington, while Zoe Lynch loved the monochromatic landscapes in orange and blue. Jenny Bangu-Ujang, Katie Sluis and myself all love a good sneaker portrait and Jaden Towns’ rendering of an Air Jordan 1 was amazingly photo realistic.

Clay Figures

The Art Room was abuzz recently with the excitement of primary students joining us to learn how to make clay figures.

A group of Year 9 Art elective students are making an art installation on the theme 'Epoch' (A New Era). They are filling a greenhouse with fluorescent paintings and white clay figures which will be lit with UV lighting. This is to create a cosmic immersive space for viewers to ponder what the future may hold.

Students from Kinder through to Year 5 were invited to be part of a collaboration, creating the small clay figures. The idea was for each student to make a small figure that becomes part of the installation. This was inspired by the work of Antony Gormley - https://mymodernmet.com/antony-gormley-field/

To make this happen each class was invited to the art room where the Year 9 students would instruct them in how to make a small figure. Phoebe Gatehouse, Jenny Bangu-Ujang, Isobel Hynes, Faith James and Katie Sluis ran the workshops with warmth, enthusiasm, skill and efficiency.

The students could also view the magical greenhouse, along with experiencing the sense of community and inclusion created by such a collaboration. It was wonderful to see the art room alive with so much energy and creativity. We are looking forward to sharing the finished results with our collaborators soon……stay tuned!
