Term 2, Week 10
Hooray! The last week of the term has arrived, and it seems like students are excited about the upcoming holidays. I wish you all a wonderful and rejuvenating break, with plenty of opportunities to dive into fantastic stories!
This Week’s Reads
Kindergarten - are reading a 2021 CBCA Picture Book of the Year nominee, ‘Sing Me the Summer’ by Jane Godwin about all the beautiful things we do in different seasons.
Stage 1 - are practicing the ‘5 Finger Rule’ when deciding if a short chapter book is a good fit for them. Students are encouraged to choose one of these stories, open a random page and see how many tricky words there are. We’re also enjoying reading the first chapter of ‘What Zola Did on Monday’ by Melina Marchetta and completing a fun word search with words from the story.
Stage 2 - is comparing and contrasting another 2023 CBCA New Illustrator nominee, ‘The Best Hiding Place’ by Jane Godwin & Sylvia Morris. Students have been discussing the differences in the use of colour and also evaluating whether the illustrations have added to the story. We’ll see if they agree with the judges in Term 3!
Stage 3 - will be reading a new book to the library, J.K. Rowlings ‘Ickabog’ then spending some time on a SORA scavenger hunt ahead of the holidays.
SORA New Log-In Information
This week, I’m spending time with Year 2 to Year 6 revising how to log in, search and refine results on SORA, the school’s digital library. What I discovered today, was that SORA has recently changed the login screens so I will attach new instructions here.
To log in: open the SORA app, and search for the ACEN library (not Holy Trinity School). You will be asked to select a Diocese (choose Armidale) and then enter your child’s school username and password. Please note this is NOT their email address but what comes before the @armstu.catholic.edu.au. You will need to contact class teachers for this information.
Here’s 4D reading on their iPads today after learning how to refine a search for an ebook and audiobook.
Term 2 Library Stats!
Throughout Term 2, a total of 4,060 books were borrowed, and leading the pack with an outstanding 340 books borrowed is 1M. Not far behind, we have 1S with 333 books, closely followed by 3G with 325 books and 3W with 312 books.
Special mention to our Kindergarten classes as well, as they consistently show enthusiasm for reading. KS borrowed an impressive 297 books, while KD borrowed 263 books. Congratulations to all the students for their love of reading and dedication to exploring new stories!

Here are some of the new books hitting the shelves ahead of the holidays. There are some great books to read before the Woman's Football World Cup starts too. Don’t forget to borrow before Friday!
Quick Bits
- Save the Date - the school's annual Book Fair will be held in the library in Week 2, Term 3.
- Write a book in a day is coming to the library next term for secondary students. See Mrs McLachlan if you're interested.
- Congratulations to George who has completed his PRC Challenge. Well done!
- Asha loved finding a book with her name in the title.
- Book of the Week - the newest non-fiction book by Samy Bailey, ‘Surprising Sea Creatures’. Her other books in the library are rarely available and I’m sure this one will be popular too.

Happy reading, see you in Term 3!
