Term 2 has flown past us and so much has happened on Farm.

Cattle

Term 2 has been busy with calving and weighing yearlings. We have a total of 26 calves on  the ground (16 bulls and 10 heifers) – all offspring from our bull, Quantum’s first year breeding. The steers and dry cows will be heading to Muchea in the next few weeks, and we’ll be welcoming a few new heifers into the mob. Next term we will be getting into calf marking with the Certificate III in Agriculture students.

Pigs

Students have been working diligently in the piggery this term; lots of litters have arrived and many truck loads have gone to Linley Valley.

They have been kept on their toes with a sizable number of grower pigs coming through the piggery; this has given them the chance to implement Low Stress Stock Handling and complete tasks such as weighing, sorting and branding finisher pigs to prepare them for sale.

The weather has definitely been cool this term, but students have worked hard to ensure not only they are warm but so are the pigs by replacing heat bulbs and straw to sustain a productive growing environment. The Cert III Pork Students have all selected their individual gilt and are currently in the process of heat detecting daily to introduce them into the breeding herd.

Sheep

Term 2 has been quiet for the sheep enterprise, with students and Technical Officers (TO's) mostly on midwifery duty. The paddocks are full of life with all the lambs growing and running around making their own little mobs, with plenty of twins and triplets even in the maiden ewes. Our SAMM's used for the artificial insemination, are growing and getting ready to lamb within 2 weeks with the Poll Dorset following. Halfway through the term, we also marked our first mob for the year, the prime lamb mob, that scored a 111% lambing rate.

Third Party Reports

All students have recapped the third-party report requirements to complete any practical requirements during the school holidays that can go towards your units of competency. The third-party reports are evidence towards the students Certificate II in Agriculture or Certificate III in Agriculture practicals. Mrs Corsini will send what the requirements are out via email if requested, we also need video evidence that supports the paperwork. Mrs Corsini recommends getting a USB and putting all evidence on the USB each night or week, to bring back to the College on return.  If any students are interested in completing these reports, please contact Mrs Corsini if you are unsure.
