START THE YEAR WITH HEALTHY AND SAFE SCREEN TIME

Many people start their year with a resolution of a digital detox. If your family could do with setting healthy limits around screens, then creating a Family Media Plan might be just what you need.

The American Academy of Paediatrics has one that you can do online -  https://www.healthychildren.org/English/media/Pages/default.aspx#home

OR I have created one that is adapted from theirs in a word document (see below).

You must ‘Save As’ first to keep the formatting.  There are spaces for you to enter info (just hover over the text and it will highlight in light grey, then click, then click on the little box to the left with the 3 dots to type).  The idea with the adapted Family Media Plan is for you to edit it to work for you and your family so you can delete and add things as necessary. It has to be done in consultation and with input from your children….it will not work if it is imposed on them.  There is also an optional individual plan that can be done for each child that is more child friendly.  It will not work if you just do an Individual Child Plan….it is a Family Media Plan so the whole family needs to be a part of it.

All the info in this adapted version is from AAP, The Institute of Games or The eSafety Commissioner.

The Institute of Games  - https://instituteofgames.com/ - are the leaders in healthy gaming education and promotion. Their document ‘Parents Guide to Gaming’ is attached below

Common Sense Media - https://www.commonsensemedia.org/ - is a great source of info with reviews on many media forms and tips for parents.
