Hi everyone! As most of you may know, we are Lizette and Kaitlyn, and we are honoured to be the MFG College Captains for 2021. After a year full of unexpected challenges for everyone, it’s great to be back at school and getting back into the normal swing of things (despite home learning having some great advantages... like getting to stay in your pyjamas for the whole day).

We’d like to say a warm welcome to all the new year 7 students and families who are joining our MFG community, we know that you will settle in just fine in no time! We too, were in your shoes not that long ago, and can remember the myriad of feelings that come with moving to such a big, new environment.

To our fellow year 12 students who are probably wondering, like us, where the past 5 years went, we aren’t quite sure either unfortunately. But we’re here, we made it! So let’s make the most of our last year of high school, and if we learnt anything from our experiences in 2020, it is that we are capable of jumping over any hurdles life may throw at us!

We were again fortunate enough to be able to begin the school year with a Smoking Ceremony led by Niki and Norm and their two beautiful children on Monday. This is something that our school has implemented over the past couple of years to acknowledge the Wadawurrung people who are the traditional owners of the land on which our school is situated. Smoking ceremonies have been an important part of Aboriginal culture for thousands of years, and it is always a great privilege to be welcomed to country and invited to be part of the ceremony.

At MFG, we strive to build our awareness and understanding of indigenous culture and we would like to thank Niki and Norm for coming in to share with us the ancient ways, knowledge and love of country passed down to them through many generations, from their ancestors, and for continuing to build their relationship with the MFG community.

This year, we are fortunate enough to be working with a wonderful group of students who, along with us, make up the 2021 Leadership Team. We have already begun planning events and activities for the whole school year and are very much excited for what is looking to be a jam packed year! With a focus on doing small things with a big impact, the leadership time will be striving to continue building the positive and inclusive community at MFG, as well as the relationships we have with the greater community through even the smallest of actions, which coincidentally, also goes hand in hand with the MFG trait focus for term 1 of being caring and respectful of themselves and others. We’re encouraging all students to keep an eye out for notices and announcements from the leadership team so that they can be involved in as many activities as they can and join in on all the fun!

We hope everyone has had a good summer break and is looking forward to the year to come just as much as we are.
