Principal's message

Welcome back everyone!

I am hoping that you all had a restful holiday and enjoyed catching up with friends and family.

Air purifiers

Just before the last day of the academic year, Principals across Victoria received word that the Department of Education were sending out the air purifiers to schools.  We had already received three in time for the VCE exams and then received an aditional 47 over the break. Although our Facilities Manager, Leigh Roberts, was on holidays he came in for three days with his son shifting them into place. I thank Leigh for taking charge of this important task. Gerry, our Maintenance Manager was also working at the school over the holiday break to prepare the school for the the return of onsite learning.

Commencement

The year 12 conference took place on Monday 31 January and the students were all very engaged and ready for their classes the next day. The year 7 students had a two day induction period to prepare them for a successful year. There were a range of getting to know you activities and a treasure hunt to familiarise them with their new school environment.  It was terrific to see them smiling and having fun.  I give my thanks to the Junior and Senior School Teams who put a great deal of effort into the planning and execution of the day.

The students in Years 8 to 11 joined us on Wednesday 2 February and it was a really smooth start to the year. I think that the disrupted years of 2020 and 2021 has helped students to appreciate the unique environment that school creates. Schools are not merely places of learning but also places that nourish the soul and teach us about important life skills.

Rapid antigen test kits

We distributed the Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) to the students on their first day back to school and personalised each box to ensure that each student received their allocated test kit.  There are five RATs per box which should last 2.5 weeks. Students are asked to test themselves on Tuesday and Thursday mornings before they leave for school.  A further supply should arrive in the school in time for the next round of testing.  My understanding is that this is guaranteed for a month and then the measures put in place will be reviewed.

Enrolments

Our enrolments for 2022 remain are very strong.  We welcomed 195 students in year 7 and our instrumental music program has seen an increase of band forms from two to three. In total we have 1060 students at MGSC travelling from 45 suburbs.  MGSC is truly a school where every girl from everywhere experiences success.

College Council

You will see in this newsletter, that we are calling for nominations for the College Council.  Nominations close on Wednesday 16 February at 4pm. I encourage those interested in contributing to the  College’s future to put forward their nomination.  There are four parent member positions, one student member position and one employee member position.

Take care
