2021 Music Ensembles Video Concert

This week sees the release of our Music Ensembles Concert, encapsulating the work that has been taking place at home and school this year. In the absence of our usual live performance calendar, we would like to invite you to watch this performance from the EDSC Performing Arts Centre on YouTube:

Congratulations to all the students involved for their work this year, persisting through remote lessons and ensemble rehearsals with restrictions on wind instruments and singing!

Music Information Night 2022

We are pleased to let you know that Music Information Night will be on Monday 14 February, immediately following the Year 7 Social Evening. All year levels are welcome.

At Music Information Night, starting 6:45pm in the EDSC Performing Arts Centre, you and your children will have the opportunity to learn more about the Instrumental Music Program, hear performances from our bands and orchestras, talk to the teachers and try out the instruments. It is very important that you attend to make the best choice of instrument, and to put your preferences in as we have a limited number of places on most instruments.

The instruments offered for tuition in 2022 are:

Brass: Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Euphonium, Tuba

Woodwind: Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Saxophone

Percussion includes all mallets and tuned percussion

Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass

We have set up a website, ‘Be Part of the Music’, where you can explore all the instruments and learn more about the benefits of being involved in a Music program. You can even use the Instrument Matching quiz to help you choose your preferred instruments, and your answers will help us to guide you towards an appropriate choice.

Although musical instruments make great Christmas presents, we would ask you to delay such a purchase until after Music Information Night when we will advise you of your successful instrument. Owning an instrument does not guarantee you a place, and it may not be the best purchase if the instrument is not suitable for your child because of mouth/teeth/braces or other issues.

The Music staff look forward to seeing you at Music Information Night on Monday 14 February!

Congratulations AMEB Candidates

The following students have completed Australian Music Examinations Board exams on their instruments this year. Some are still waiting on their results, but congratulations to all of the following:

Zac A – Classical Guitar Grade 6, Jemimah C – Clarinet Grade 3, Lauran C – Flute Grade 2 (Honours), Taasnishka G – Classical Guitar Preliminary (Honours), Hannah K – Flute Grade 1 (Honours), Esther L – Saxophone Grade 3, Isaac S – Saxophone Grade 4 (Honours), Kaela T – Clarinet Grade 3, Shaun T – Saxophone Grade 3 (Honours), Alexander W – Clarinet Grade 4, Hoe Mun W – Saxophone Grade 8, Gary Z – Saxophone Grade 5.

Musical Instrument Purchasing

Musical instruments make great Christmas presents, but please don’t purchase an instrument from a non-preferred supplier before speaking to the Music staff. It’s very discouraging for a student to own an instrument that is substandard and difficult to play.

It is important, however, for students past their first year of learning an instrument to be considering purchasing an instrument. Preference does go to new Year 7 students for the school hire instruments.

Owning an instrument is a better long term-investment as you generally get your money back when you need to resell it.

Our preferred suppliers are:

Brass, Woodwind, Percussion – Fine Music or Oz Winds

Strings – Bows For Strings or Whitehorse Music

Important Dates 2022

31 Jan-1 Feb – Instrument demonstrations for 2022 Year 7’s

14 Feb – Music Information Night (Chamber Strings, Symphonic Band)
