Careers

Over the last two weeks or so I have been disappointed by the lack of interest in a Careers event that I have been advertising. Only 4 students have registered to attend the HIA Building & Construction Careers Expo. I know that there would be at least 30 current students across Year 10 - 12 who are interested in one day securing an apprenticeship in this industry. To secure an apprenticeship you need to be proactive. There will be local employers in attendance who will be looking for apprenticeships towards the end of the year.

Some of the highlights of the expo include

  • Interaction, with industry professionals talking with attendees about vocational education and training, career pathways and trade and skilled careers.
  • Apprenticeships – all you need to know about being an apprentice; different career paths; quality vocational training; industry skills shortage sectors; finances, pay and conditions; how to get apprenticeship-ready; vet school pathways.
  • NRL players “real skills for a real career” video and live presentation - guest speaker presented by trades-qualified NRL players, information and motivation combine to give inspirational advice on goal-setting, discipline and commitment towards life success!!
  • Question & answer panel – tradies, industry experts and successful apprentices
  • Followed by a light lunch

If interested fill out the form  ASAP, but by the 20th May at the latest. If numbers end up being restricted, priority will be given to those looking for an apprenticeship ASAP

You will receive an email with a permission note as soon as numbers have been finalised. If you do not return the permission notes by the due date, your spot will be given to the next person on the waiting list.

I interviewed Zac a couple of weeks ago and this is a summary of that interview.

I am super proud of him. As you read this keep in mind he is only 23. As a side note I got him to do some work for me and he did a great job, so if you are looking for any electrical work to be done, do not hesitate to contact him.

Name: Zac Graham

HSC Year: 2013

What are you doing now?: Owner of Zac Graham Electrical

Summary of your time since school: I left school at the end of Year 10. Did some Work Experience and enjoyed it. My parents were supportive of me leaving at the end of Year 10. I completed a 4 year apprenticeship and stayed on with my employer for 3 years after finishing my apprenticeship. I have just recently gone out on my own. I lived at home during my apprenticeship and saved enough money to purchase a house. I renovated it and then sold it and now have purchased another one this year.

Advice to current students: Go and do Work Experience in several different area to find out what you want to do. If you want to be a tradie I feel that you should leave at the end of Year 10. It puts you two years ahead of everyone else

Each week I will be sharing a tip which relates to your future working life.

If you register for a Careers Event

  • Before you register, ensure that you are able to attend
  • Make sure you put it in your calendar so you do not forget about it
  • Check emails on a regular basis for updates and ensure you respond to anything that requires a response
  • I totally understand things come up and sometimes which means you are unable to attend. If this is the case, please ensure you email me to let me know you are unable to attend BEFORE the event. It does not look good to outside presenters when I say 35 people have registered and only 20 turn up.
