News from our Classrooms

Foundation News

The term is certainly going by very quickly! It is now Week 6 and it will be a busy one in the Foundation area.

On Wednesday the students will be participating in the first session of the Fire Education program with the Brunswick Fire Firefighters. A second session will be held next Wednesday 20th November.

On Friday, the very excited students will be participating in their first St Fidelis sport’s day. They have been practising the games, they know which team they are in and they are super ready to get running. We hope that the weather will be just perfect on Friday!

Mrs Wenckowski is back from her leave on Friday just in time for sport’s day, so she can’t wait to see the very clever students have lots of fun and work together as a team.

The students have been working very hard in Inquiry. They have recently found out about what types of toys their parents and grandparents played with when they were younger. Now they are finding out the date of their Baptism, the church their Baptism was held at and the names of their God-parents. They also brought into school artefacts from their history to share with their classmates. We are certainly learning lots of information about each other’s history.

In Mathematics, the students will be revisiting addition this week and subtraction next week. We are always focusing on writing numbers correctly but some students are still forgetting how to write numbers 2, 5, 6, 7 and 9 correctly. Perhaps at home this can be a focus as a little bit of homework over the next week or so.

Have a wonderful week!

Year 1/2 News

In Inquiry, the students have been learning how stories, experiences and conversations help them understand, connect and build relationships to other people’s cultures.  They have been learning about the significance of Diwali (the festival of lights) and experiencing Diwali Indian dancing. Our 1/2 students are great at swinging their hips and making animals movements! They have been learning how Sudanese people have different cultural experiences when moving or visiting another country.

In Literacy, students are further exploring cultural differences and making personal connections through a variety of texts.

In Numeracy, the students are focussing on finding half, quarters and eighths of shapes and collections.

In Religion, the students are learning about forgiveness through various parables.

Year 3/4 News

During the last few weeks, the students have spent a great deal of time thinking about the question, “What makes a just community and how can I help?” They examined the story of the Good Samaritan to find out what Jesus teaches us about caring for our neighbour and how to treat others in the same way that we would like to be treated. The students identified the many small ways they can be good neighbours at home, at school and in the community.

Our excursion to the Immigration Museum highlighted the problems and challenges faced by people who travelled to Australia in search of more opportunities for themselves and their families. The stories described people who had courage and hope for a brighter future and have made a positive contribution to their communities such as Cuc Lam.

Year 5/6 News

The Year 5/6 students had a special visit from the local labor MP Peter Khalil, last Tuesday. They asked him some terrific questions about his role as an MP as well as questions related to our Inquiry, 'What does it mean to be Australian?'.

Peter has some great insights and advice for students about studying hard and focusing on learning so you can achieve anything you wish to.

The Year Five students are currently writing their applications for student leadership positions for 2020. Please speak to your child about this and encourage them to submit their applications by this Friday the 15th. They need to put down at least three preferences for a position in case they do not receive their first preference.

The students that have stalls in the Night Market are currently preparing their products and purchasing the items they need. We still need sewing machines and any parents/grandparents that can come in to school on a Friday afternoon to help the students sew scrunchies and Christmas stockings. If you are available on another day, please contact the school and we will endeavour to arrange a suitable time for you to help with the sewing.

We welcome parental support and encouragement of the Year 5/6 students at the Sports' Day this Friday the 15th November.
