Basketball

Thank-you to everyone who helped on Saturday to kick off the new season of Basketball. We finished with 15 wins and 15 losses, so a balanced day.

Firsts

The Firsts battled their way to a pleasing win at St Stanislaus’.  It was a very close match. Anthony Maras and Matt Fakhoury lead the way with solid performances, along with Oli Jacquot, who slotted TWO clutch THREE pointers to put us into the lead with only 2 minutes to go. The team then held off a concerted attack from St Stanislaus’ to finish off Round 1 with an important away win. It was nice to see all players contribute to a real team win. The other A teams also performed well with the 13s, 14s, and 17s winning their matches.

Seconds

Commiserations to the Seconds who were defeated at NBISC by a well drilled Redlands Firsts. Zac Karlsson suffered a fractured ankle with an unlucky fall. The team will miss Zac for this first half of our season. “Speedy recovery Zac.”

Across the day there were some very exciting wins, which were balanced by some heart breaking loses. From here I hope that all players are working on improving their skills, through regular practice at home and our teams are improving as cohesive units at our trainings at school sessions.

Game of the day: I have to give it to the Firsts. An away win at St Stanislaus’ is great.

Play of the day: Nick Brewer with a buzzer beater to win the match for the 15Cs.

Deserves a mention: Connor Brannan (5ths) finishes of a sound win with a half court Buzzer beater at full time. Andrew Imseis and Corey Farnworth (4ths) both had impressive games. Matthew Venticinque (14D) a solid performance.

Please note: There have been some changes to the draw so please check the game times and venues each week. All D Teams, Round 6 Saturday 26th November is now a home game and Round 10 Saturday 25th February is an away game.

Player of the round: Nicholas Ward (U14 Red) – 41no and 3/7 with a hat-trick! Great work!

1st XI v Central Coast Grammar School at Oxford Falls Chaplin Oval – ISA Round 1. On a wet day the 1XI bowled first; Louis Mosmann (1/15) struck in the 8th over and a further four quick wickets left CCGS reeling at 5/28 in the 14th over: Dermott Beattie (3/24) and Lachlan Hearne (1/18). A determined partnership from CCGS pushed the score to 5/72 in the 32nd over whence James Brown quickly took 4/12 with Justin Porter (1/0) picking up the final wicket. A small chase often proves difficult. Disaster struck the SPX inning on 20 with a run out and some loose shots caused the 1XI to reach the winning total six wickets down (Joe Unwin 21, Will Roser 17 and Lachlan Hearne 14) in the 23rd over for a double bonus-point win.

From the 13th to 16th of October four of our Athletes competed at the NSW All Schools at Sydney Olympic Park.

Our boys entered themselves into this event and competed against the very best Athletes from Public, Catholic and Independent Schools across the whole of NSW.

The St Pius X College Season finished after the CIS Competition, so boys have trained and entered motivated by competing at a high level and driven to achieve new personal bests in their events.

Pushing yourself to do your best is tough and against the best it is even tougher. So I would like to recognise and congratulate the following students:

  • Kalani Lenehan who competed in High Jump, Triple Jump and Long Jump
  • Dominic Panozzo who made the final of the 800m
  • Tom Hunt came 3rd in the 400m Hurdles under 16’s as an under 15 (gaining a school record) he also made the final of the 400 and 800m
  • Daniel Hall who competed in the Javelin. In the discus he came first with a new school record.

Congratulations

NSTA – News from Round #2

It was disappointing not to be able to play in Round 2. Thank you to our players and tennis families for being organised and checking and following our Wet Weather procedures.

Not 24 hours before, I was considering if smoke from nearby controlled burns would impact our players...? On that subject – in the weeks ahead if there is smoke haze from such pre-Summer burns, either at Talus or AWAY venues – please have any suitable medication on hand and players/parents and carers should feel free to stop play for players needing that care, no pressure to play on at all for people sensitive to smoke.

Fees: Parents and Carers for students in Years 7-11, please finalise payments for this Term 4 / Term 1 (2017) activity by the end of this school week – 28th October 2016. Trybookings will close after this date.  If you’ve questions please contact the Finance Office directly.

Looking forward to Round 3!
