The Most Holy Name of Mary
At our Assembly Prayer this week, we recognised an important Feast Day devoted to Mary, Mother of the Lord Jesus, called ‘The Most Holy Name of Mary’. Held on 12th of September this Feast Day comes four days after another Mary feast ‘The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary’. Recognising the name of Mary as Holy began in 1684 but the decision was made to revoke it from the Catholic Liturgical Calendar after the Second Vatican Council. In 2002 this feast day was reintroduced by Pope John Paul II who also had a special adoration for Mary.
Devotion to Mary, no matter what the feast day, has had a long history at St Pius X College. The Christian Brothers have a special devotion to ‘Our Lady of Perpetual Help’, with the feast day held on 27th June. An image of this icon appears in every classroom at the College as well as a beautiful mosaic in the courtyard. Special devotions are given to Mary during the months of May and October, with the latter month having a special focus on the Rosary due to the Feast Day on 7th October which celebrates the Feast of ‘Our Lady of the Rosary’.
A beautiful Memorial Mass was held for Mrs Robyn Olson, wife of long-standing staff member Mr Jim Olson, on Tuesday in the Christian Brothers' Chapel. Thank you to the many staff, students and parishioners who attended and gave thanks for the life of Robyn.
As we begin the final weeks of Term 3 we pray for the Year 11 students as they sit their Preliminary Exams and for our Year 12 students as they commit themselves to the HSC challenges ahead. May they continue to feel the strength and support of our Loving Father through our community.
