‘Mystique’ Wearable Tech Fashion Show

Last Sunday, twenty-five excitable St James students participated in a Global Wearable Technology Fashion Show at Latrobe University, Bundoora. Students modelled their own and others’ designs, all featuring ‘wearable technology’ which in a nutshell is LED lights sewn or stuck onto garments, computer boards and battery packs combining with conductible thread to light up the LEDs.

The St James students were full of energy and bubbled with excitement throughout the day, bringing a real sense of fun to the event. It was also a very long day and participants, parents and teachers had to tap into deep reserves of resilience to navigate through some of the more tedious elements of the fashion industry - namely, plenty of waiting around and issues with technology. This included a couple of our designs being misplaced and technological issues with some of our wiring and powerboards.  All representatives from St James kept their cool and remained steadfast in their positive outlooks and ensured that our students were well loved and supported. Special mention to Michelle ‘Gets Things Done’ Thomas for her infiltration work to get into the inner workings of the backstage crew and make sure our St James team were looked after. Thanks Michelle!

The final ‘catwalk’ was simply, fun! Lots of laughter, smiles and exhilaration allround. St James has definitely got a few students to watch out for in the modelling stakes in the years ahead.

Emma and Emilie (Year 6) have written a full review of the event below. Thankyou to the parents who sent in videos and photos. Some will appear here but we’ll try and collect all others as the term progresses.

A huge thanks to all the students and parents who supported this project. Later in the term at an assembly we’ll ensure the right people are recognised for their hard work and dedication in this area.

A final comment from one of our parents, Olivia Utber...

“Ruby thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience and what a wonderful opportunity for the students. I was really proud of our school on the day, the children were so well behaved and performed beautifully”.

STEM Leader

On Sunday the 6th of October there was a Wearable Technology Fashion Show held at La trobe University in Bundoora. There were 25 St James students who participated in the fashion show, plus Mr Mac and our very supportive parents. In year 3 we had Lily, Olivia, Grace, Maya, Siena and Lolita. In year 4 we had Eliza, Natalie, Mia, Kamran and Venetia. In year 5 we had Georgia, Olivia, Neve, Sophie, Leyla, Mia B, Veronique, Sakura, Imogen, Mia D, Ruby, Millie and Billie. In year 6 we had Emma and Emilie. On the catwalk it looked like nothing had gone wrong and everything was according to plan. In reality, backstage was a disaster. Most peoples outfits only half worked, didn’t work at all or it wasn't even there. There were tears but also smiles and laughter. Some people had to wear different outfits that they didn't create. 9 out of 25 students either didn't go on the catwalk or wore a different outfit. Participating in the Wearable Technology Fashion Show was a lot of fun, but a little scary at the same time. We did this because it was a good learning experience and is also a STEM related fashion show. We would like to thank all the parents that helped us throughout the show. We would also like to thank Mr Mac for helping to make this all possible and joining in the fashion show. Hopefully St James will get another great opportunity like this sometime in the future.
