Kitchen and Garden Update

Hi everyone,

This week we have a huge harvest of broad beans, cabbage and broccoli.

After much searching I found a deliciously refreshing salad that used both cabbage and broad beans. It has a lemon dressing that we found to be a little bit tart so the students added a tablespoon of honey and created a dressing that was both sweet and sour. The end result was a salad that was both unique and delightful.

Quesadillas were a huge success even if they were made with broccoli! Most students came back for seconds.

You will find both recipes attached for you to try at home and experiment with.

Try adding some corn kernels or ham to the broccoli mix or perhaps experiment with changing an ingredient or two to the salad dressing and who knows, you may create a new family favourite!

We welcomed Prep/1 Fletcher to the kitchen last week as they start their 4 week rotation. To start off they will be learning about the correct way to set a table and learn what the differences  are between good and bad table manners. A great follow up to do at home is ask the children to help set the table and invite good table conversations to your family dinner table. You could perhaps even ask them to explain why some things are considered to be bad table manners.

All students have been given a laminated place mat to assist them with table setting.

I have included a template in case you need to print out some extras for siblings.

Another glorious day in the garden last Wednesday.  There is plenty to harvest at the moment.  There was a big Savoy cabbage which was used in a salad. Unfortunately with one very warm day early last week, the green house got too hot for our poor “viewing pot” beans and we lost all but one very hardy soul.

We’ve been busy removing the last of the winter plants and have begun mulching the base of the fruit trees preparing for the hotter weather to come.
