Musings from the Senior Hub

The atmosphere in the Senior Hub is electric with excitement.

2020 Year 12 students are well into the thick of things with their final exams. Students are feeling well prepared for exams and our team of exam supervisors have again commended them on their organisation, promptness and endeavours to give it their best shot. Excitement, with a touch of nerves and anticipation of what lies in store for students, has given the Hub a fresh burst. We are all along for the ride.

Our next cohort of Year 12 students has already dipped their toes into their 2021 timetable with our revised transition model. The bar has been set high by the class of 2020 so we look forward to fantastic results this time next year! On Monday 30th November we see Year 10 students start their Year 11 program. We welcome 2020 Year 9 students into the Malgobila Campus for transition into Year 10 starting on Monday 7th December.

It has been extremely complex managing both internal and external exams, transition programs, alterations to subject selections, the Study Camp at Coonawarra, collation of VCE results, individual Consideration of Disadvantage statements, 2020 Graduation and the 2020 Presentation. Not just Hub staff - all staff are to be commended for their efforts in facilitating these processes, often within a very short time frames.

Graduation 2020

While we are excited to hold a Graduation evening for Class of 2020 on Thursday 3rd December, we are sad and extremely disappointed that due to the COVID restrictions we are unable to host families in this milestone celebration as we have done at the Riviera Christian Centre in the past.

The Graduation evening will be held at Boucher Hall on Thursday 3 December. Students are required to be at the hall by 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start, dressed in their best. A light individually packaged supper will be provided for each student. It is essential that students provide dietary requirements to Yvonne on 5150 4826 as soon as possible.

Students have been asked to provide 'before and after' photos and a little information about themselves which will be used when they are presented with their graduation certificate.

The graduation will be professionally videoed and graduating students will have the opportunity to purchase a 2020 Graduation DVD which will also contain other footage from throughout the year. The College is investigating the opportunity of live-streaming the event to families.

The above information has been mailed to each family.

2021 Year 12 Study Camp

From Monday 23rd to Wednesday 25th November, our 2021 cohort of Year 12 students are fortunate to have the opportunity to attend a study camp at Coonawarra. The camp will ensure students have a strong academic start to 2021 and support student wellbeing by establishing effective study habits, improving time management skills and participating in team building activities. We are also looking forward to strengthening relationships between staff and students, all with the intention of assisting our students to be the best they can.

We are especially looking forward to the re-creation of the Year 7 camp photo from 2016 at Coonawarra (as well as seeing Yvonne on the high swing and Mr Falla fitting those long legs into a canoe).

Updated VCE and VCAL Policies

The 2021 versions of the VCE and VCAL Delivery and Assessment Policies are available to view on the College website. These policies contain detailed information about the expectations and guidelines for satisfactorily completing coursework, assessments, work authentication, attendance and absences, exams, and special consideration. Printed copies will be distributed to all VCE and VCAL students in Year 11 and 12 at the beginning of 2021.

Year 11 Biology

The Year 11 Biology class was fortunate to be the first to use the Science Department’s new gel electrophoresis equipment. After learning about inheritance, genetic conditions and genetic testing, students played the role of ‘genetic counsellor’ to analyse some DNA samples from a family to determine whether they had the genetic trait or not. This technology is studied in detail in Year 12 Biology, so it is an excellent opportunity for students to put theory into practice and develop deeper understandings.
