LIBRARY NEWS

Book Week 2020

While it may have looked a little different to normal, we were still able to join in the fun and celebrate Book Week 2020. This year’s theme across Australia was ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds’ and that certainly describes all the interesting people we have in our school.

This year, staff and students across the school shared some of their favourite stories and books in ‘Readings From the Red Chair’. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to have a go, the minute a video is turned on, it’s amazing how different it feels. These videos all appear on the school’s Facebook page and I hope you enjoy listening to these wonderful stories as much as we did reading them to you. It was also special to see our students join in, they were really brave to have a go.

I also included a video of all the photos I’ve taken in and around the library to show families how much your children love to read. I’m so lucky to work in a happy place that children enjoy coming to. I’ve taken a lot of photos over the year so keep an eye out for your child.

Book Week also saw a different version of our Booknic as we were unable to have our students mix across stages, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t fun. Students were able to share their favourite stories with friends within their stage and from Kinder to Year 6, all students stopped to share reading on Wednesday. This week I've shared photos of Stage 3 reading together, next newsletter I will include more from other stages.

Thank you to our teachers who also read to students every day of Book Week. From picture books to longer stories, reading was truly the focus of the week at Holy Trinity which tied in beautifully with our new RED (Read Every Day) homework program. HTS truly loves to read!

CBCA Books of the Year 2020

One of the key events of Book Week is the announcement of the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s best Books of the Year. Last term primary classes read all stories in the Early Childhood and Picture Book categories and each class voted for their favourites. So how did we go compared to the real judges? Most classes picked ‘My Friend Fred’ by Frances Watts as the Early Childhood book winner (who doesn’t love a dog story?) but no one chose ‘I Need a Parrot’ by Chris McKimmie as their winner. It was a real surprise! To find out more about each book or to watch a replay of the announcement, go to the CBCA website here.

Book Fair 2020

While Book Week may be coming to an end, next week the Scholastic Book Fair begins in the library and like everything else, it’s different this year too. As we cannot have families onsite, the way we normally buy books at the Fair needs to change.

The Scholastic cases will be set up and ready for next Monday. I will take photos of each section and these can be found on the school Facebook page where families can view each item and make choices. Students will also have an opportunity during their library lesson to make a wish list to take home. This year, you can send your child with cash to buy in the library or you can pay online and they can collect them.

Instructions for paying online

1.      Click on the online payment portal https://parentpayments.scholastic.com.au/BookFairs (as per wish List)

2.      Enter State and School

3.      Enter credit card details and amount

4.      Record receipt number on the Wish List or print receipt

5.      Bring Wish List back to the school to collect books

The Book Fair is an optional activity and there is no pressure to buy anything. The Book Fair operates in lieu of the Term 4 Book Club.

Thank you to all our families who support their child to read, it’s truly appreciated by everyone at HTS.

Happy reading,

Mrs Toni Fraser
