Sports News

It is my great pleasure to announce that we will be going ahead with the Soap Box Derby for Prep – Year 4 and the Billy Cart Grand Prix  - Years 5/6 on the last day of the term – Friday 18th December.

Soap Box Derby: Prep – Year 4

If your child is interested in being involved, you/ they will need to organise a box that 2 children can fit into, one behind the other comfortably, they cannot run side by side.

Some of the problems in the past have been that the box has not been big enough for the 2 children to run freely and not enough tape or adhesive to keep it intact, as the box must be in one piece going over the finishing line in order to win the race.  The box can be decorated if they wish and the children can also wear a costume if they desire.  Either is acceptable, remembering that this is all for the fun of the race and of course some like to look good as well.  The children will have the opportunity to swap being the driver and the passenger during the race at any time.

The races will be divided into Prep Girls and  Prep Boys/Mixed.

Junior School Girls, Junior Boys/Mixed

Middle School Girls, Middle School Boys/Mixed

If a girl wishes to have a boy as her partner in the box, then the two of them will race in the Boys/Mixed race, but we will not have boys enter the girl’s race.

First place-getters will receive a Gold Medal and all participants will receive a Participation Certificate.

Billy Cart Grand Prix:  Year 5/6 Only

Year 5/6 students compete in the Billy Cart Grand Prix, rather than the Soap Box Derby.  If your child wishes to be a part of the race, they will need a billy cart which has wheels and a handle so that it can be pushed.  In some years, the billy cart has had peddles, however these are not to be used for propulsion, but locked in place. Both students must wear a helmet as they will be swapping over in the Pit Stop and both having a turn at driving and pushing.  The winners will receive a trophy and there is also another trophy for the Best Dressed overall.  Again, there will be a Girls' Race and a Boys/Mixed race, however if we don’t get enough participants, then we will run them all together.  We will still have the girls' winners and boys' winners separate.

Unfortunately, we will not be allowing parents to attend the race due to the ongoing Covid situation and DET Policy.

So girls and boys, start getting your equipment together.  For the boxes, I suggest going to the big department stores and asking them if you can have some of their boxes.  They usually have them flattened out the back in the skip so I am sure they will be happy to give them away if they are big enough,  eg: The Good Guys, Harvey Norman, Target, Kmart etc.

Thank you to Noel Jones Real Estate for being so generous and sponsoring our event.
