Visual Art 

The Term 1 Unit of Inquiry is called 'The Art and Culture of India' which integrates with the Transdisciplinary themes- 'How We Express Ourselves” and “How the World Works'.

 

The Unit focuses on cultural celebrations, traditional design, architecture and how the vast and evolving country of India embraces these into the future.  

 

Students Participate In 

 

Drawing Mehndi- Henna hand patterns. This involved detailed drawing designs within the outline of their hand. They painted backgrounds inspired by the colours of India, demonstrating controlled painting skills and detailed illustration skills using pattern and tone. 

Creating Ceramic Palaces inspired by the architecture of India. They used ceramic skills and knowledge of form and function. 

 

Constructing Paper Sculpture with layers, colour and shape inspired by the Holi festival. They depicted knowledge of balance and connection using colour, shape and sculptural skill. 

 Music 

PYP Unit OF Inquiry: 'How the World Works and How We Express Ourselves'. 

Focus

To explore how ideas can be expressed through sound, looking the ‘Songlines’ of our Australian First Nations people. Students will develop their own ideas and express them through music. Students will increase their music knowledge as they investigate the elements of music and use traditional notation to create an original composition about a place in Australia.  

 

The students will

  • Continue to expand their own understanding of formal music notation 
  • Read, write, arrange, sing, play and listen to music with a focus on the theme of place, especially music by First Nations People 
  • Experiment with expressing ideas through movement, mime, sound, pitch, rhythm etc 
  • Make choices about sound that represents ideas 
  • Take risks when communicating their original ideas to peers 
  • Understand and accept that the ideas of others can be very different to their own 
  • Work collaboratively with a small group to create, rehearse and perform a short piece of original music 
  • Shape elements of music using imagination and creativity, to communicate ideas to an audience 
  • Identify features of music, and be able to discuss the purpose that it was created for using music terminology 

Library

The children are timetabled weekly, to borrow books from the Library with their classroom teachers. During these borrowing sessions, they will gain a better understanding of Library locations and the borrowing/returning procedures.

 

The focus will be on reading for enjoyment, interest and information. The children will have the opportunity to consolidate their literacy skills and further their development in literature appreciation. The Library program also supports and extends the units of inquiry being studied in each year level and provides classrooms with resources to enrich the units offering varied forms of information. 

Physical Education 

The term one unit we are focusing on is 'How we Organise Ourselves'.  

  

Focus: Working together as a group showing tolerance and respect for others. Demonstrating open-mindedness and caring for each other to connect with one another as a team or individually as well as listening to the teacher and being respectful of how activities are performed in PE classes. 

 

We engage students in-  

Team Building Activities- Parachute Games  

Throwing and Catching Strategy Games.    

Modified Lacrosse and T-Ball Activities.   

 

Refine the Fundamental Motor Skills of Throwing, Catching and Striking previously learnt, to perform more complex motor skills. 

 

These skills will be used in Modified Cricket Games along with some strategies to improve game performance.   Fun Lacrosse skills Clinic
