From the Principal

Welcome

“Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.
Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.”
Philippians 2:1-5

Welcome to the new academic year! It has been a great start to the year and we rejoice in welcoming new students, new families, new staff and new buildings and facilities. As I tell our families often - a school simply isn’t a school without the buzz of learning around. The buzz is certainly loud and proud at Lakeside!

In the opening weeks of the year, our staff and students have focused on the above words from a part of the Bible titled ‘Philippians.’ Following the death and resurrection of Jesus, a number of his followers continued his works and wrote letters to each other. ‘Philippians’ is one of those letters.

In this letter we read one of my favourite lines from the Bible ‘You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.’ Why is it my favourite? Thanks for asking!

I had the blessing of attending a Lutheran school for my secondary education back home in South Australia. We had a Principal by the name of Mr Bruss. Much like me, he was heavily involved with the day-to-day running of the school. He taught classes, could be seen out in the yard and would lead student worship often.

Without fail, and regardless of what his topic of conversation was, Mr Bruss would always bring it back to these words “You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.” These words still ring in my ears as I go about my day to day work at Lakeside College.

What does it mean to have the same attitude as Jesus? It means to love each other, work together with each other, and seek to focus on the things that bring us together rather than separate. It means not to be selfish but to look out for others and to seek to be humble.

At Lakeside College, we seek to empower our students to thrive, to serve and to succeed in order to bless the world and honour our Lord. These words from Philippians offer great advice to us all, as we seek to fulfil this vision in our students and community.

May God bless us with His Spirit so that our community can be of one mind and seek to have the same attitude as Christ Jesus.

Blessings

Tom
