From the Principal Team
We congratulate the students on their positive start to Term 3.
On Monday 15th July, staff from the four Greater Shepparton government secondary schools got together to explore the essential learnings of the Victorian Curriculum and to continue their work on planning engaging and innovative curriculum for the future.
22 Year 12 students also attended a two-day University Camp in Melbourne last week. Students experienced five universities and will now be able to make some decisions about their future. It was great to hear students’ enthusiastic discussions about the campuses that they had visited. Thank-you, once again, to Mary-Ann Linehan for work in organising the trip, and to Mary-ann, Cam Reid and Kylie Glover in escorting our students on this valuable trip.
PARENT OPINION SURVEY
WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK
Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents at each school.
It is designed to assist our school in gaining an understanding of parents’ perception of school climate, student engagement and relationships with our parent community. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.
The survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. The survey can be accessed via desktop computer, laptop, tablet or mobile at any convenient time within the fieldwork period from 23rd July to 11th August.
Approximately thirty per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous.
DOCTOR IN SCHOOL
As you may be aware, our school was successful in being selected to participate in the Victorian Government’s Doctors in Secondary Schools program.
As part of this program, Shepparton Medical Centre operate a clinic on school grounds each Tuesday to provide free access to primary health care for students at our school. We know that teenagers are the least likely of all age groups to seek health care, but we also know that many health problems that can have consequences into adulthood start at this time of life. This program seeks to address this issue. As is the case with all medical practices, young people have the right to access medical assistance when and where necessary.
If required, please see a member of the Wellbeing team to organise an appointment for your child.
2020 COURSE SELECTION PROCESS
This is the time of the year where senior school students start making decisions about their pathways and subject selections for 2020. The process will commence with an Information session for parents and next year’s year 11 students.
Letters have been posted home, inviting all parents and students in Year 10 to attend one of three information sessions, depending upon the time and venue that suits them the best.
- Tuesday July 30th: Wanganui Campus Senior Learning Centre from 6.15pm-7:15pm
- Tuesday July 30th: Wanganui Campus Senior Learning Centre from 7:30pm-8:30pm
- Wednesday July 31st McGuire Campus Presentation Room from 6:30pm-7:30pm
This will be followed up with course counselling, where current year 10 students and their parents will be invited to attend a course counselling session on August 13th, where they will meet one-on-one with a member of our pathways team to discuss the best VCE or VCAL options for their desired pathway.
Current Year 11 students will be given a presentation during school time on changing programs, the requirements of passing Year 12 and how to start gathering information for applications into further study beyond Year 12. Parents wishing to discuss their Year 11 students’ course options are encouraged to contact Mary-Ann Linehan (our Careers Practitioner), Leigh McIntyre or Myf Saxton (Year 12 Team Leaders) to set up an appointment.
By running these information nights and the course counselling days, we are aiming for every student to have a better understanding of the subject choices, the school’s expectations and costs associated. As a result, the aim is for every student to have a carefully thought out and planned career pathway.
As we have done over the last couple of years, students will be entering their subject preferences online. Students will be provided with guidelines and advice on this process over the next week. The deadline for selections for current Year 9,10 and 11 students is Friday August 24th with the Year 7 and 8 students later in term 3.
REPORTS
As has been previously communicated, ALL REPORTS (SPA and end of semester) are now uploaded to the XUNO Parent Portal. The end of semester 1 summary reports are now available to be viewed on XUNO. Throughout semester 2 teachers will continue to give subject specific feedback in the Classwork, Homework & Assignments section on Xuno. There will also be two more additional SPA reports completed prior to the end of the year.
If you have any questions in regard to any of the above, or are having trouble logging on, please contact the school office on 58214322 or email the school at shepparton.hs@edumail.vic.gov.au
