Primary News

What a year we have had in Prep L!!!

This year has been so much fun, we have learned a lot, had so many adventures and we are preparing ourselves for grade 1.

Here are a few more things we have been up to.

We all helped raise money for our school by decorating cupcakes they were delicious!!! We also ran around, through the obstacle course and threw paint during our fun run!

In Science we have been learning about chemical sciences, materials and their properties so we thought it would be a lot of fun to make some slime! It was so messy but we really loved playing with it.

PMP has been really exciting, so many new pieces of equipment and building up all our gross motor skills!

Science fair was incredible, we shared all of our projects and even got to visit all the classrooms to see what everyone else had researched.

In Integrated studies we have been designed our own healthy smoothie recipe. We came up with a fancy name for our smoothie the Chocolate vanilla dream supreme. It was delicious!!

We had the best day ever at LEGOLAND! What an incredible excursion to finish off our year. We saw a 4D movie, went on rides, built cars and went on the playground. We were exhausted but had a fantastic day!

This has been the best first year of school, we can’t wait to see what 2020 will hold.

Miss Levy - Class Teacher

We’re almost at the end of Term 4 and we cannot believe how quickly the year has gone by. This term has been jam-packed with so much of learning and fun.

Our Preps are now confidently reading and writing. Our Grade One students have continued to grow in leaps and bounds with their learning. We are so proud of them!

Our Science Fair this term was a huge success with almost all our students participating, and showing their enthusiasm for Science. It was a day filled with questions, answers, conversations and project displays, and of course family and friends joining in the learning.

Our excursion to Lego Land in Chadstone was very exciting. Our students built spinning tops and used their Science knowledge to make predictions and draw conclusions.

We created our own smoothies and they were delicious, and healthy except for the ice-cream we added. The Colour Fun Run, was a lot of fun and colour. Our students’ eagerly put on their fancy sunglasses and took off through the obstacles, getting sprayed with colourful powders. What a sight that was!

We are so looking forward to our concert. Our dance lessons and rehearsals for our concert are coming to an end. We can’t wait to show off our skills and talent, and our fabulous costumes.

Thank you parents and carers for your dedication to our students’ learning, and your support in our many activities and events throughout this year.

Mrs Abraham - Class Teacher

This month has been packed full of exciting learning activities!

Our excursion to Legoland , on the 21st of November was where students experienced so many different Legoland worlds. We started all together working in teams of 4 to predict, make and test which side of a spinning top, made of lego, could spin the longest. Some favourite activities were the 4D movie where water was sprayed on us during the movie.

There was a laser shooting ride and a ride that when you peddled, you could go higher. I’m sure that the students will remember this as their best excursion ever!

The colour fun run on the 29th of November was a busy afternoon with the sausage sizzle lunch then running through the obstacle course whilst being covered in bright colours of powder paint! You can see the before and after shots of the student who loved it so much that they wanted to go a second and third time around!

We have also really enjoyed receiving letters from pen pals from St. Mary’s Primary School.  We have been writing our replies to them making sure that we have no spelling errors as well as writing as neatly as possible! They had really neat handwriting!

Students also had fun designing, making and evaluating a healthy smoothie.

Next is our Primary Concert! We hope to see all the parents there as we have been rehearsing through every week to ensure that we do our very best on the night!

Mrs Lilburne - Class Teacher

We have been working very hard to achieve our goals!

We have been learning to annotate poetry and use symbols to help us understand what we read. Everyone has enjoyed Literature Circles where small groups of students read the same book and discuss the important sections, rather like a book club.

  • Chan loves the discussion about our reading to work out what a certain stanza means.
  • Abigail enjoys learning about poetry
  • Paul enjoys finding the meaning of unusual words
  • Dorothy loves reading groups, working out what the text means together.

In writing we have been focusing on developing learning goals to improve specific areas of our writing. Students have had many successes in creating a range of imaginative stories and persuasive texts. Everyone has enjoyed sharing their writing with their peers. We are currently writing letters to our Pen Pals at Babinda Primary School in QLD. We love asking questions of our new friends and receiving a response.

  • Shevi asked if our Pen Pals are real kids.  I said ‘Of Course they are!’
  • Elijah was excited to write to school children in QLD as he lived in QLD a few years ago.
  • Stella enjoyed finding out about her Pen Pals pets.

Maths groups have been a busy hive of activity, learning to calculate area and perimeter and measure length. We are currently measuring volume and capacity. We are realising the importance of the four mathematical operations to accurately find the answers.

  • Madison loves learning everything about maths
  • Joseph has enjoyed learning the times tables
  • Chinnu loves measurement
  • Jacob loves measuring everything, he can use a ruler, measuring tape and trundle wheel.

In Science we have enjoyed melting everyday items and watching how they change. We have also investigated frozen items and documented the changes that occur.

  • Alan enjoys going to the Science room and melting chocolate.
  • Sotiris enjoys answering questions and thinking through the reasons why things happen.
  • Chelsea loves melting chocolate and learning about space.
  • Collin enjoys drawing his findings and labelling the diagrams correctly.

In Integrated Studies we have been focusing on food and fibre, finding out where our food comes from and how it is grown in Australia and around the world. We have also looked at the difference between imports and exports. Everyone enjoyed learning the potato song and understanding how they grow. Every student planted a seed and watched the seed grow, focussing on plant needs and doing our best to keep the plant alive!

  • Yuan enjoyed drawing pictures of her plant and watching it grow!
  • J.C enjoyed the close reading and annotations
  • Ariana has enjoyed learning about different countries and the animals that live there.

We are dancing our little feet off in readiness for the end of year concert. We are dancing to a rock song, it is very fast and the steps are quite difficult but we hope to do our best on the night. We cannot wait to show off our skills at the Stomp concert. See you there!

Have a fabulous holiday and festive season, see you in 2020!

Mrs McPhie - Class Teacher

This term has been great fun and enjoyable! We enjoyed doing the Colour Fun Run last week because we got paint thrown at us. At the Fun Run we had the best time ever even though the glasses did not fit us properly. We visited the Yakult Factory two weeks ago and we got to see how Yakult was made. We also got a free sample of Yakult. STOMP this term has been amazing and fun because we had two amazing teachers help us dance! By Siena, Soubin and Din.

Maths is fun! I learnt Chance in maths and it was really enjoyable because of the easiness and the fun of it! I loved it! I also liked doing tests, that was my favourite thing to do. I have also been learning length and area, it was really fun with Mrs McPhie. I liked measuring the length of my food and the area of tables and other shapes. I like Maths because it is interesting and I am good at it! By Psalms and Kiske.

In writing this term we have been learning about persuasive writing. Persuasive writing is so enjoyable! When you write a persuasive it is all about YOUR opinion! We have all enjoyed writing persuasives. Recently we wrote a persuasive about our Dream Holiday. That was fun because some of us persuaded our parents to take us there! By Chantelle, Madhulika and Evie.

In reading I liked Literature Circles because of the different roles. I also liked sharing ideas. One of the roles is Literary Luminary. This person had to find parts of the text that were funny, interesting and important. By Andrej, Gabi and Ruben.

In PE/Sport we have learnt how to throw, catch and aim. One of the biggest events was orienteering. This involved a map with a colour and we had to run around the school and find different coloured cards. The other games we have been playing in sport and PE are dodgeball, poison ball, kick ball, robbers and guards and memory tag. By Brandon and Victor.

In STEM I enjoyed building a house because we got to choose our own materials for example cardboard and paper. I also liked STEM because we made arcade games. In Art I enjoyed drawing a picture and painting it to turn it into a stained glass window. By Tami, Aida and Taj

Ms Naylor - Class Teacher

It has been a fantastic year for 4/5 and we have finished with lots of hard work and fun. The Class of Rock danced their feet off at the ‘Battle of the Bands’ school concert on Thursday night. Their hard work, dedication and practise was celebrated on stage with a show stopping performance.

Congratulations to all students who participated in the school fun run, it certainly was a colourful day. Students thoroughly enjoyed the vibrant colours and the obstacle course. Thank you to everyone for your efforts, lots of money was raised for new facilities at school.

This year has been full of fabulous learning experiences and I hope all students in 4/5B are proud of their amazing achievements. It is a very busy time of year and I want to take this opportunity to wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and a safe, restful and fun break over the holidays.

Ms Bishop - Class Teacher

In Science we have learnt about solids, gases and liquids. We learnt a new word - Non-Newtonian fluid, which mean a state of matter which is neither solid nor liquid. In Maths our favourite topics were chance, geometry and division. We have been learning to write effective captains application letters using persuasive devices and formal language.

Concert night was incredible! All of the classes were outstanding with all their magnificent dance moves. It was such a fun night. Angie and Sierra did a fantastic job on stage singing Horses and You’re the Voice. At the end of the night, we all performed the finale We Will Rock you by Queen. It was the best night ever!!!

On the 6th of December, 5W went to the Yakult factory. Yakult is an edible product used to restore the balance of good bacteria in your body. We were learning about the manufacturing of Yakult. We first learnt that Yakult containers are made by injecting molten plastic into bottles and then they are dried. We learnt how the labels are made, and how the product is processed.

Did you know that Yakult is the only company in the world which uses the bacteria lactobacillus paracasei shirota in their product? It was a fascinating excursion and we learnt a lot that day.

Ms Warburton - Class Teacher

This term has been amazing, our Stomp concert was a huge success and the amount of practice undertaken really paid off. The grade 5 and 6’s just had their excursion to the Yakult factory where they saw real hands on experience of how the product is manufactured before it reaches the selves. This tied into their integrated unit of how products are manufactured before they reach their local supermarket. The grade six’s have just completed their science unit where they observed the different states of matter and its underlying properties.

Students still have a variety of things to look forward to such as the exciting year six excursion to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic centre. The grade six graduation which is not far off either, and we have been collaborating together to organise the event such as picking an appropriate song to sing at the monumental event. Students are definitely excited as the year comes to a close. I wish them all the best for the coming future as we wrap up this school year.

Mr Surendra - Class Teacher

December has been very hectic for the students in 6E. Students have been finalising lots of assessments to see their growth over the year. Both the students and I have been very pleased with their results. We have also been kept very busy with rehearsals for the Primary Concert. Many members of 6E had acting roles and they spent most lunchtimes over the past few weeks perfecting their roles. Meanwhile we were all very busy practising the class performance.

Last week we had a visit to the Yakult factory which gave students an opportunity to see how foods go from being a raw product to being ready for sale to the public. It was really interesting to see how all aspects of the process from creating and labelling the Yakult bottles to packaging the end product was all handled on the same site. Students were also given a sample of Yakult to try.

The students have also been preparing for Orientation Day by putting together a portfolio of information about themselves. Students have created a passport that will tell their new teachers about their family and their background; their learning style; and what they hope for in Secondary School.

Another exciting upcoming event is the grade 6 graduation excursion.

All of the grade 6 students will be heading to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre to spend the day splashing around in the many pools that are available. These include the wave pool, waterslides and an inflatable obstacle course.

Students have also been busily preparing for their graduation which is an important formal event in the grade 6 year. We will look forward to seeing the students in their finery as they are presented to their families and the Carwatha College Community as graduates of Primary school.

I wish all of the students in grade 6 a very successful start to Secondary School. The students in 6E have been lovely to work with this year. I wish them and their families a safe and restful holiday, and for those that celebrate, Merry Christmas.
