Secondary News

Hi to all the year 7 students and their families; what a great and fast 2019 it has been!

I cannot believe that 12 months ago I was meeting all of these students on Orientation day in their year 6 uniforms. It has been a great learning experience and fun year for us all. I have enjoyed getting to know all of these amazing students and their families.

As I said at the start of the year, it is an amazing opportunity for the Year 7 students to make a difference to the culture of Carwatha College P-12. With the new uniform making a massive difference to their attitude and perceptions of learning. As well as the new High Achievers program, the Football academy and the numeracy and literacy focus to classes, we have been able to see rapid growth both academically and personally for  all year 7 students.

This year the students have been on a number of excursions that have allowed them to improve relationships, build friendships and increase their rapport with teachers. All of these positive experiences improves the learning for your student and makes school an enjoyable place. Some of these excursions have been the Tree climbing in high ropes, surfing, Science excursions to the aquarium, Sporty Mathematics and put putt golf, the Year 7 Ancient history day as well as Mordiallioc Geography coastline excursion and many more.

We have celebrated success in classes and focused on, and recognised, the college values. The students have been learning to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves to learn and do more. This is evident in their willingness to help in leadership events, orientation programs, and performances at the Multicultural Day and music night.

I would like to congratulate all year 7 students on a great 2019 and I look forward to seeing them back at school in 2020, refreshed and excited for Year 8. Oh, and in perfect uniform, including blazers, ties, white socks, clean shoes and College backpacks.

Have a great break and happy new year to all families.

Thank you and see you in 2020.

Mr Antony - Year 7 Coordinator

This year has flown so fast!   I cannot believe it is Christmas already! Fourth term has seen the students finish their subjects for the year and receive their results.  I am extremely pleased with how hard the year 8 cohort worked and I think that is reflected in their end of year reports.

We have had personal achievements recently with Dagi going to Japan to represent his club in football, they year 8 volleyball team coming second at the Victorian volleyball cup and Angie going to Queensland to play in the National volleyball tournament with the year 11 girls team.

This was my first year at Carwatha College P-12 and I am very lucky that i was able to get to know the year 8’s as well as I have.  Next year they will move up to year 9 and have a new co-ordinator in Mr Brown, and I am sure he is excited to get to know you all, and continue to see you grow into amazing young adults.

Thanks for all the memories year 8

Mr Hammond

Can you believe we have nearly reached the end of 2019 and our Year 9 students are ready to move into the Senior years of their schooling.  This will mean, a new area to become familiar with – V3 centre, VCE subjects and moving towards adulthood.

It has been a great year academically and socially.     It has been a busy year with lots of activities and excursions.

Here are just a few of the highlight of the 2019 Year 9 school year:

  • Participation in Carwatha College swimming, athletics carnival and district sports
  • Positive Relationships Day
  • Participation in Monash Champions
  • Careers : VET discovery day, South East Careers Expo,
  • Excursions : shrine, botanical gardens, Phillip Island , Tree Surfing, Marvellous Melbourne
  • Victorian State Schools Spectacular
  • Party safe day
  • Funfields

Many other programs and events within the College and beyond were also well represented by the year 9s. Examples include SRC, form captain elections, Music Evening and school assemblies.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each student for an enjoyable year and also extend a special thanks to the year 9 teachers who are so very dedicated in their provision of exceptional learning experiences for each young person.  It has been a pleasure to coordinate such a wonderful group of students for the past 3 years.  I will truly miss each and every one of them.

Mrs Rentzis  - Year 9 Coordinator

Congratulations to all our fantastic Year 10 students. They did a great job on their work experience. We have had excellent feedback from their supervisors and some have even secured casual employment.

All the best for the holidays and see you in the new year!

Mr Quinn - Year 10 Coordinator

Guest speakers

As our fun year ended, we wound down with a lecture from TSSM, the presenter, Hanna Farah, provided the year 11s and year 10s with some useful information and tips to get the best grades from our classes next year. In order to get top results, he asked us to write a promise to ourselves and sign it.

Our year level coordinator had also organised for Diana Nguyen, a comedian, to come and talk to us. Diana’s talk to us really inspired us to continue to try even when nothing seems to be going our way and to ask for help if we think we can’t handle the situation by ourselves. A big thank you to Mrs Bawa for organising all of the guest speakers and all excursions this year for the year 11s.

Leadership applications

In the last few weeks of term 4, the year 11s were asked to start applying for captaincy positions. Students could apply for College Captains, House Captain, Sports Captain, Arts Captain and there is a new captaincy position available to the international students, International Captain. All applications had to be handed in and students attended an interview where we were asked three questions. This was a stressful, yet, a great learning experience for all of us. We were excited to find out about the successful candidates on awards night.

Colour run

On the 29th of November, our school held a Colour run fundraiser. All money raised went to improve the school facilities. The run was fun and full of colour, not so much flavour, I am sure all those who tasted can agree. The day was fun and one to be remembered. Thank you to the SRC team for putting it all together.

CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2019!

Saints All Nations NGA Academy

Year 7 students participated in weekly AFL clinics run by St Kilda Football Club. Sessions focussed on developing knowledge, skills and teamwork. Coaches also identified talented students and invited them to join the Saints All Nations Next Generation Academy. The Academy has been based on school grounds, running weekly afterschool sessions. Students within the Academy further developed their skills and tactical knowledge, and worked with students from surrounding schools. Academy Head Coach, Trent Dennis-Lane, has previously played for Sydney Swans as well as the Saints. Students have also had access to High Performance Trainers and Mentors. Congratulations to the students selected to be involved in Academy!

Year 7 Cricket Victoria Clinics

Cricket Victoria has also worked closely with Year 7 students during weekly Sport sessions. Adrian Jones has coached students and worked to build student’s fielding, batting and bowling capabilities. Sessions were highly engaging and featured many activities that were easily modified to meet the abilities of students. If there are any students or parents that would like information regarding local cricket clubs, please see Amanda Thomas, College Head of Sport.

Four Day Volleyball Victoria Schools Cup

Victorian Junior Volleyball Tournament at MSAC and Eagle stadium, was held from Sunday 1st of December - Wednesday 4th of December. Carwatha College P-12 entered Year 8 girls, Year 9 girls and senior boys volleyball teams to compete in the Victorian Junior Volleyball Tournament. Schools from across Australia came to compete in the tournament. The senior boys and Year 9 girls did extremely well finishing 5th in their Division with some close and exciting games. The year 8 girls worked really well making it all the way to the grand final. It was a close game, the girls winning the first set, but unfortunately losing the next two sets by a couple of points to Yarra Valley Grammar. The year 8 girls received the silver tournament medal. Overall, it was a terrific effort by all students, congratulations on all your achievements.  Miss Witt, Volleyball Coach
